What you’re suggesting isn’t available. A Green extension after two years will be capped at 25%.

The only players who can sign Supermax contracts are “5th Year Eligible players” (ie rookie-scale contract extensions), which allows 25% -> 30% upgrades, and Veteran Designated Player Extensions for 30% -> 35% upgrades.

Therefore, the first Supermax possible extension has already been denied, and the second one requires 7+yr tenure to sign.

that said, I think this is a flaw in the CBA, the Veteran extension language should allow for 25% -> 30% Supermax scenarios, but it doesn’t appear to. However, even if it did, the 140% raise limit might take precedence still, which stops him at -25% max.

Are you sure that's the case if Green hits supermax escalations? For example, Brown signed a supermax extension after obtaining 2nd Team All NBA. The final year of his contract was 31 mil, whereas the first on the extension was 52 mil. Brown wasn't given the full rookie max - he signed a four year extension originally.

Hmm almost like Jalens team knew the impact of the 3 year deal. Adding that trade kicker and player option was also revealing. Houston may need to trade him away if he gives off the impression he wont resign and try to get SOMETHING, but the issue there is also that teams could just wait out the short contract.

Would you say that Jalen and his team have all the leverage with this deal?

Brown had 8yrs tenure with same team. Thus qualified for the Designated Veteren contract that I mentioned above.

He’s being paid 35% right now.

Jalen definitely has leverage on getting to 7yr tenure quickest for 30%. However, if he does that, it’s not that painful to the Rockets. Rockets will still have leverage over other teams.

Scenario, suppose instead of extending with a 5yr @ 25%, he does a 1+1 (PO) @ 25%, bc he has that leverage. Here, the threat is he can go UFA for 30%, with an opt out. But, I *think* the Rockets would own a 35% Jaylen Brown Supermax extension counter-offer, provided Jalen achieves Supermax criteria and he opts in of his second extension, to hit 8yr before extension kicks in. (However, it’s not clear to me if he can extend that 1+1 into a Supermax.)

so, I don’t know. All leverage Jalen has requires injury-risk tolerance, too. I see him signing max extension as soon as possible.

True. Jalen has been a workhorse so far in his career. Maybe thats why he hasnt been as hot to trot for a new deal like Sengun, but it could rear its ugly head at any moment and make Jalen look like a fool in the process. This is a hell of a way to bank on yourself though.

Do you see a preferred destination as enough to sway him from more money here? How much exactly is he leaving on the table if he goes to another team?

I edited my previous post. It’s not clear to me if Jalen can get a 35% Supermax extension from the 1+1 (PO) scenario. I think he can, but that will be a unique situation.

Lakers are clearly the destination who provides the biggest 30% UFA threat.

By my calculation (assuming he is allowed a Brown 35% Supermax deal), here’s the competing salaries from a 1+1 (po) intermediate extension:

    • Opt-out for 30% UFA = 5yr/$358m from 2029-2033 seasons
    • Opt-in for 35% Supermax = 6yr/$510m from 2029-2034. (The extra year is because of the opt-in for 2029).

If we're talking about a player who is rejecting a max extension in favor of a bigger max offer, he must be playing really well. All Star or All NBA basically.

If Jalen is playing at that level, he will be one of the faces and a founding members of one of the best teams in the NBA. Basically this would mean Udoka has been very successful developing Green and the team is thriving as most of the other young guys develop too. We'll have amazing choices when it comes to financial flexibility and trade assets. He could be the best player on this team in the West. Still a top 5-10 market. No state income tax. The team that drafted you and believed in you. The most guaranteed money that can be offered.

You think he's going to leave this to join the Lakers? I don't think he's that big a Lakers fan.

Has any player ever turned down a max offer extension when they could get it a year before FA? Even the ridiculous Brunson deal gave him money a year early, because at his level a player if he tears and Achilles he’s not seeing a max. You really need to be at the VERY top to take that risk, KD did and got a max after his injury but he was a top 3 player in his prime. Luka could risk it, jokic, but it’s a short list.

If Jalen reaches All-NBA, the possibility he extends with a Max 1+1 is real. That’s 2 yrs Max guaranteed vs 5 yr Max, but offers immense flexibility, and significantly more money.

And there is precedent for 1+1 deals used to get you to a higher Max. Doesn’t necessarily mean you intend to bolt, though.

I had never heard of a guy leaving 100Ms on the table before Brunson. We are in uncharted territory in respect to Jalen’s contract and how players dictate their future in the new CBA.

You’re misreading the timing of this.

It’s not like: Jalen becomes All-NBA level -> he signs a 1+1 to get the 30% max in a year.

It’s: Jalen becomes All-NBA level -> he turns down a 25% max extension in Oct. 2026, plays a year -> then turns down a 25% max new contract in summer 2027, and signs a 1+1, and plays another year -> then opts out and signs a 30% max new contract in Oct 2028.

So to get to the 30% max, Jalen would have to turn down $236M/5 to play two separate “prove-it” years to get to $284M over that same 5 yr window.

    Not gonna happen.

    I’m not following.

    Here is the scenario:

    1. plays two years, then signs a 25% Max 5yr
    2. plays two years, then opts in one year, then signs 30% Max 5yr
    3. plays two years, then extends 25% Max 1+1 (po), opts out after one yr, then signs 30% Max 5yr

Both Option 2 and 3 result in a 30% Max 5yr after only one extra yr vs Option 1. You appear to be saying there are two injury-risk years.

Well he didn't leave 100 million on the table, that's not true. He left the POSSIBILITY of 100 million on the table. Sengun also "left 40 million", but those 40 million were not actually offered, it was only a possibility to be offered. If brunson tears his achilles in april, he's not getting a supermax offer, same for sengun. What you're describing has to my knowledge never happened, and IMO could ONLY happen with a player who is an unquestionable MVP, basically Luka to me would be the floor.

You’re missing that he can be offered and sign the 25% max extension in October 2026, after year 1 of his rookie extension, not year 2.

So to get to 30% he has to play 2 extra years without injury on short term prove it contracts.

The Rockets FO did this on purpose. The point of the contract is to create a favorable extension scenario if he hits, or get off him if he doesn’t.

Dont you think the money starts to reach obscene levels as it is? Brunson I believe said something similar to where he was fine taking 100M less to reap an immediate reward that he felt comfortable with while the team gets stronger around him and where he still gets to make another 100Ms or so on subsequent contracts. I applaud Brunson for this - he's from the Northeast and he is fine taking less to be home AND have a competitive team around him without him draining all the resources. Players should do more of this.

Sengun took what was offered for the health insurance more than anything else IMO. Either take that offer or risk another season and the chance of making even a fraction of that if something crazy happens.

Maybe an extra 3 or 4 generations worth of financial freedom isnt enough to keep guys like Jalen around teams that dont offer interests and ideals of "home"?

Hard to beat that Cali weather.

Again though, Brunson did not ACTUALLY take less. They offered him the absolute max they could and he took the security over risking injury. Sengun also took "less" for the security. I agree the money is obscene and we might someday see someone actually take less, but we never have. The only actual situation i remember is Dirk staying in dallas for nothing towards the end of his career when the rockets offered a max after parsons. If he is truly dead set on cali then he will go there at some point regardless of any other factors

California is a big state and Jalen is from the Fresno area, if I’m correct.

Would someone who is from Houston be itching for the chance to play for the Spurs or Mavs because it’s “home”?
