http://www.washingtontimes.com/sports/20060626-115926-5134r.htm John N. Mitchell THE WASHINGTON TIMES June 27, 2006 Soon after tomorrow's NBA Draft, the Washington Wizards must decide what to do with restricted free agent Jared Jeffries. Because he is a restricted free agent, the Wizards can match any offer made to the 6-foot-11 forward. According to sources with knowledge of the situation, a number of teams will show interest in Jeffries when they are allowed to do so beginning Saturday. Teams interested in Jeffries include Chicago, Houston, Philadelphia, San Antonio and New York. Jeffries averaged 6.4 points and 4.9 rebounds and started 77 games for the Wizards last season. In the Wizards' first-round loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, he averaged 8.0 points, 6.2 rebounds and a team-high 1.17 blocks in 35.8 minutes a game. Jeffries averaged just 25.3 minutes a game in the regular season, which concerned some teams at the time. However, when the Wizards emonstrated a need to rely on him more in the playoffs and his minutes increased, his agent, Andy Miller, believes those teams put those fears to rest. "Teams wondered about why his minutes fluctuated, and he did to," Miller said yesterday. "I know that Jared is going to want have more confidence that he's going to see his playing time be more stable." Sources with the Wizard have said they want to keep Jeffries, but that will no doubt depend on the offers he receives. Last season, Jeffries earned a little less than $2.8 million. The Wizards will have their mid-level exception available to them to sign Jeffries as well. That would enable them to sign him to a five-year deal at a little more than $5 million a season. During the past month, two agents agreed that Jeffries had shown enough versatility in the regular season and the playoffs -- he played all five position at various points in the season -- to increase his worth perhaps two-fold. "He's capable of playing a lot of varying roles and teams noticed that," said one agent, requesting to remain anonymous. "He's 6-11, he's athletic and he's coachable. Those are the things teams like in a player." The Wizards have just less than $49 million committed to salaries for next season. The salary cap for next season will be determined later this summer but is expected to increase by a few million. Last year it jumped by almost $6 million. More important than going over the salary cap is avoiding the luxury tax, which last season was triggered when teams spent more than $61.7 million on salaries. Teams exceeding the luxury tax must match every dollar they spend over the tax.
Depending on the price, could make a good back-up SF. I don't think he'd get the minutes he wants though. I don't think he's a starter so i don't see him fitting here if he plans on getting some serious run, but yes a good back-up for T-Mac, if he's out of our price range (likely) i'm happy with Bogans.
Ive been sayin we should go after him since I learned he was a free agent, hes not much of an offensive player but he hustles and can crash the boards for us and play some sick defense. He can be our starting 2 gaurd or play the 3 and have Tmac at the 2, he can gaurd the opposing teams best player and gaurd them well. 6"11 aint no joke. Of course I didnt think much of him when Tmac dropped 62 in his grill but it happens.
He's not worth the entire MLE but he's a decent player. Guy has size, can play defense and get rebounds and can even step out and hit a few three pointers every now and then. Definitely a decent pickup for the right price.

Because he is a restricted free agent, the Wizards can match any offer made to the 6-foot-11 forward. The Wizards will have their mid-level exception available to them to sign Jeffries as well. MLE for your own restricted free agent? I don't see Jared Jeffries getting more minutes with the Rox than the Wizards.
he's pretty good, great defender and can play a lot of different positions, should take a look at him
You want a perimeter defender who will take the hardest matchup every single night on the wing. You want an excellent rebounder. You want size at the 2, after years of 6'2" David Wesley. You want Jared Jeffries. I live in DC and I've watched him play 80 games or so a year. He is the anti-Mike James. He is tough, dogged worker, who keeps his mouth shut, an excellent character guy. He is not injury prone, having missed only 10 games in the past 3 years. However, he doesn't have what a Mike James would give you. He can't shoot the 3, but has a fairly consistent midrange jumper. He is everything we thought we were getting in Swift but didn't this season. His stats are a little skewed because he played on a Wizards team, where 3 guys (Arenas, Jamison, Butler) took almost all the shots, and a Wizards team that played absolutely no defense on a whole; meaning less rebounds. Depending on what happens on Wednsday night, Jeffries would no doubt be an excellent addition to the Rockets. Even if a Roy, Gay, Redick, Brewer is drafted, the question is if it's worth the full MLE (and it will take the full MLE) to sign a short term starter and eventually a solid and versatile 6th man off the bench. I think that if we do end up drafting one of the swingmen above, then Jeffries would add a lot more to this team than say a Mike James. Radmonivich, however, is a different case. But he's not going to take the MLE. So I say, spend the MLE, bring in Jared Jeffries, who will eventually backup the 2/3/and a small 4 positions. You do get one exception every single year.
We have a couple of trade exceptions we could use to snag him. I would love to have him on the team. I think he would add some great depth to our team.
Agree. My only concern is whether he can play SF to back up T-Mac. I still grit my teeth over JVG choosing to keep Ryan Bowen rather than Scott Padgett.
I think he could play either forward spot but I would hope we could still snag someone else to help with other holes in the roster. Plus we still have the 32nd pick in the draft. IMO PJ Tucker could back up TMac as well as other positions on the floor.
I have watched him play as well, but not 80 times. He would be an ideal player to defend against Dirk Nowizki in the west. But can he shoot the 3 ball.
Why not Childress from atl. He's a better scorer, long and pretty good rebounder also. He can be had for cheap since they probably like the #2 pick Williams and the AK-47 ish J. Smith.
Why do you think he can be had on the cheap. Just because they got a bunch of young players doesn't mean that they're just going to give them away. Jeffries would be nice, but not for the MLE. The bigger TE would be perfect, but if we move Head in a Roy deal, then we are rapidly running out of assets. I wonder if Wash would look at a sign and trade for bogans?
I really liked him when he was drafted...thought he would be the steal of the draft. If he can be had, why not? He certainly fits the profile of the new NBA 3/4.
