Rockets Improvement Plan #10,865: Add more coaches to the existing coaching staff

Seems to be working pretty well for Dallas. What do they have - 10, 12 coaches?

How about if we keep our existing coaching staff, but add some fresh, talented coaches to help balance our young players with our old/experienced coaching methods? A new set of eyes might help us analyze our weaknesses, build offenses and defenses that perform better in this day and age, take advantage of our young talent, and help them fit better with Rudy's game.

I'd also like to see a drill-seargant physical trainer on our team. I'd like to see our guys more physically cut, bulked up (not fattened up), and aggressive as hell.

Sound like a good idea? or do I need to cut back on the crack?

To me, it depends on how much Les is willing to spend on coaches. I would love to see the Rockets hire Oscar Robertson for Yao, as was being tossed around a couple of months ago.

For now I will allow you to keep your crack.;)

We need to hire a big man's coach just for Yao, and then fire Rudy for a more disciplinary coach, and also bring in a veteran PG.

I love the idea of additional coaches, and it is certainly up to Les to incur that expense.

I doubt Oscar Robertson is available, but I would think he'd be of more value to Steve and Cuttino.

    But bring in:

    1) Moses Malone for Yao, Cato, Griffin, Taylor and TMo, or even Kareem or Bill Russel.

    2) John Lucas, if he would take less than a head coaching job, to help the guys with drug issues, and work with the shooters and teach Steve how to be the best point guard. Steve really has not had much training in that. He has gone from team to team, until he came to the Rockets. Who has taught him the fundamentals of the PG position? He needs someone he'd really respect.

    3) a brilliant strategist, like a Jeff Van Gundy, and

... then let Rudy lead them. He's a good player's coach and leader, who can usually get a lot out of his players, and we need the stability and history he provides,

but he needs help, if he's going to do what it takes to get us back to championship form. If Les really believes we have collected championship talent, he's got to add the coaching that is of that same caliber. Mr Mean is a good guy, but not enough. We don't even have to lose who we have, just add more, like Dallas.

    Couldn't agree more.

I think there should be a coach for every position (5), a coach for defense (1), a coach for offense (1) and a head coach (1). That's 8 in kind of a 5 -> 2 -> 1 hierarchy. Then during practice, each person on the floor is getting an individual and team coaching. And during games, they can pay more attention to details and make adjustments quicker and more precise.

And please - let's get people who know how to teach - let the head coach manage (ie. No AV folks!)

I don't think Jeff Van Gundy would want to be an assistant. Co-Head Coaches?

WELL I SAY BRING IN LARRY BROWN and Van Chancellor.

A good human veteran point guard. A good person...like Avery Johnson.

    Moses Malone definitely.

    PLEASE.

That's what we need. We need more coaches than players since they are uncontrollable.

Sounds great. It sounds like the minimum the Rockets should do.

1)I like the idea of bringing in Moses to teach Yao how to play in the post and Kareem to show him how to play the offensive game (sky-hook, anyone?) during the summer...
whoops, Yao isn't going to be here most of the summer, is he.
    Nuts.
2)Hire Lucas as an assistant. He has roots in Houston and with the Rockets and sure as hell could teach Francis... man, I'd like to see him light a fire under Moochie's a$$, since we're probably stuck with him. This is a good possibility, imo.
3)I wish we could get JVG as an assistant, someone who could take over without a glitch if Rudy's health acts up again. I doubt that he would take less than a head coach position, however. You could at least try.

If we could do those things, and make some roster moves to shore up some glaring weaknesses, then Rudy should be given another year. Maybe. Maybe no. I'm suffering serious no-playoffs depression, so any suggestions I might have or agree with are subject to undue depressive influence. And there are no LOL involved. Not from here.
