there is this poll at cnnsi about who is the most dominant duo of and listed are scottie pippen and michael jordan john stockton and karl malone shaq and kobe and tim duncan and david robinson where is drexler and hakeem!? the rock's are like rodney dangerfieid: "just cant get no respect" ------------------ johnny "red" kerr:i'm glad the bulls did'nt draft steve francis. dan roan: why!!!!! johnny red kerr:because he would forever be compared to michael jordan.
what a shock ------------------ Shane "Save Our Rockets" "Life without basketball in Houston........without an arena that is what it will be"
One season they were tough to figure out. Mario Ellie, Kenny Smith, and Sam Cassel also had a lot to do with it as well. The majority of the time that Hakeem and Clyde played together they were both in the twilight of thier careers; Hakeem was busy being slower and slower, while Clyde perfected the art of extremely poor shot selection at the end of games (how many times were we down two with 30 seconds left, and Clyde, usually fully covered, would just jack up some rediculous looking three that would bounce high off the back of the rim?) Mainly they played well for one post season...after the championship it wasn't such a pretty thing. I'd argue for Hakeem and Ralph before I'd argue for Hakeem and Clyde. (note reader, I am a bigger Clyde Drexler fan than anyone on the planet) ------------------
but at least they won a championship together. thats more than i can say for malone and stockton . and when drexler first got there that was olajuwon's best playoff performance ever, so i would'nt say he got slower and slower then. ------------------ johnny "red" kerr:i'm glad the bulls did'nt draft steve francis. dan roan: why!!!!! johnny red kerr:because he would forever be compared to michael jordan.
I don't really think Drexler and Hakeem qualify as a dominating duo. They really didn't play together long enough in the pros for me to call them a great duo. Clyde spent the majority of his career in Portland and only came to Houston for one last-ditch effort at a title and was succesful. Beyond that, nothing spectacular. I'd also argue for Ralph and Hakeem over Hakeem and Drexler. ------------------ Drop kick me Jesus through the goalposts of life, Tumble end over end, neither left nor right. I'd have to disagree with you there puedlfor. They played as a tandem for about 2 1/2 years and one a title. Look at the other tandems. Jordan and Pippen- you can't argue there. Karl "Elbone" Malone and John Flopton-nice tandem but how can you consider them dominating. They never won. Shaq and Kobe-have not completed three years together technically and atleast for one more day are yet to win a title. Duncan and Robinson have barely completed the third year and have won one title. If you look at CNNSI's picks they took the tandems from the Bulls championship teams, the Spurs championship team, the soon to be Lakers championship team, and replaced the Rockets tandem with the Utah tandem. How can they be dominating if they never won the big one I ask? Could it be because SI was booed by Houston at our championship parades. Its not like they shafted us then when they decided to put anything else but the Rockets on the cover after they one the title. CNN and SI. ------------------
Now that sparked my interest Rocketsiv - were SI booed at the parades and why? What were they doing there in the first place? ------------------ http://rocketdavo.tripod.com
I am a huge Rockets fan, but I don't see Hakeem and Clyde as a tremendous duo. All though amazing players in their own right, they did not play many seasons together. Hakeem reached the pinnacle of success before Clyde had even joined the team. I hate the Jazz, but really, when speaking of duo's Malone and Stockton, I don't think you can beat them. Now Duncan / Malone and Shaq / Kobe, time will only tell. ------------------ A Chuck paraphrase: It was surreal! And I don't even know what that means! Charles after Eddie hit THE SHOT
Although both great individuals Hakeem and Drexler are not really a duo in the way that you could say Stockton and Malone were, or Jordan and pippen. The reason they werw ignored (Asides from the fact that Houston is always ignored by the media) is that the Houston title wins are seen more as team performances where as a team like The Lakers are very much a two man team. ------------------
Shaq and Kobe?? They haven't been around long enough to be dominant either!! "I hate the Jazz, but really, when speaking of duo's Malone and Stockton, I don't think you can beat them. Now Duncan / Malone...." Well, they HAVE been beaten on many occasions. I think you have Malone on the brain there Puff. I know you meant Duncan / Robinson. ------------------ We need some meat in the post! [This message has been edited by RocketsPimp (edited June 16, 2000).]
I am a freak, my bad!!! ------------------ A Chuck paraphrase: It was surreal! And I don't even know what that means! Charles after Eddie hit THE SHOT
hakeem and clyde? why get upset that they are not there? where is magic and kareem, bird and mchale? this is not a slight against the rockets, simply an inocuous "who cares" poll... ------------------
I see you'lls point about the duo but I think what got me the most frustrated was that you have duos that have been around only as long as Clyde and Hakeem and you can go either way on who has had the most success. Anyways it was not really the parade it was actually the rally held in the Astrodome. They got booed because the Rockets were the first team ever not to be put on the cover of SI after winning the championship. Instead they chose to put the World Cup winner that year. They put a special issue out only for Houston. It was a major show of disrespect to the city of Houston. ------------------
RocketSiv, is just part of being a Houstonian when it comes to the sports world.... Think about this , the comets have won 3 championships right but if you look at national media they still try to hype someone else up ......... dumb, dumb, dumb. ------------------ "Why can't we just get along"...quote from a scientist in Half-life 2nd edition.
yep, whenever they show a commercial of the wnba, they always show that girl from the liberty shooting that long three when they did'nt even win the championship. ------------------ johnny "red" kerr:i'm glad the bulls did'nt draft steve francis. dan roan: why!!!!! johnny red kerr:because he would forever be compared to michael jordan.
Brahma everytime i see that I say . . GREAT SHOT BUT YA STILL GOT YOUR *SS HANDED TO YA!! COMETS!! 4 - PEAT! Rockets Out slugged the Knicks and Mopped the Floor with the Magic [well for 3 games] Where is the respect? Even During the 'Jordan' era Rockets always played them AT LEAST Even . anyone say anything on that? Rocket River ------------------
Really, does anyone consider SI a reputable sports service anymore? I had lost a lot of respect for them, but the final straw came when they had Auburn as their preseason No.1 in Basketball this year. ------------------ Its only my opinion. Feel free to disagree.
Anyone remember that magazine that did there preview issue for the NBA the year after the first championship and the headline on the cover boldly states "Can the Knicks Repeat?" That had to be one of the all time classics. It was from a fairly reputable NBA magazine. ------------------
Drexler / Olajuwon was probably the best duet on the floor this decade. Both were together for their twilight time, and they won for it. And unlike Mike/Scottie, this duet was unpredictable enough to be interesting. The first victory was about a relative rookie team finding wins off the back of a single veteran. The second victory had two old friends capping their careers... ------------------
