I remember when Yao Ming first arrived, one of the first things RudyT said was that Yao should learn to do the hook shot. When you are that tall, nobody can stop your hook shot one on one.
You can say that about any position in the draft. A team either picks a player who everyone scouted being there or they pick a guy who fell to them because others passed. What teams DON'T do is pick a player down on the list. If the consensus picks turns out good then everyone was right. If the gamble picks turns out bad then the team is badly ridiculed and gms lose their jobs.
Why is Memphis' defense better when Eady is off the floor? So far this year , within 6 ft of the hoop, players shoot 5.6% higher than normal when guarded by Edey. Across all shooting zones, players shoot 3.5% above normal when guarded by Edey. He's hardly a defensive anchor. Making declarations about rookies after 4 games is pointless. Too much will change.
It's now fact? You are officially declaring Edey as a bad defender after 5 games? I seem to recall another young center that was foul prone in Houston that everybody called a defensive liability. Last season he was a + defender and nearly got an all-star bid. To be clear, I'm not writing off Reed. I'm simply predicting that Edey will get ROY, or at least he'll get more votes than Reed. Mostly because Edey will get more playing time than Reed. I'm not predicting who is the better player or who will have the best career. Just saying Edey will get more ROY votes than Reed. (I hope I'm wrong)
I would be shocked if he doesn't get more votes, he's multiple years older. Would be pretty sad if he didn't. I don't think edey will survive defensively though no
Edey can get more votes for RotY and still be a bad defender. Both of those things can be true, they are not mutually exclusive at all. Actually watch him play, Edey is not a defensive focused player, he's just a big guy who knows how to use his size to put in buckets, not to be a lockdown defender.
That’s it. Fold up shop. Move the team to Louisville. Zach mother falcon Edey isn’t a Rocket. I’ll be sleeping on the couch before I get chucked to the streets. Already quit my job. I hope Jalen dunks over Edey so hard this thread is immediately dissolved and never heard from again except to acknowledge that it happened….and then Reed hits a 3.
I mean, imagine saying we passing on Edey for Reed is like picking Oden over Durant, just freaking ridiculous.
Zach Edey can be ROY but won't be the Best Player in the Draft that is for certain. Reed Sheppard, Tidjane Salaun Hornets, Stephon Castle Spurs I believe are better. These are definite Franchise Players.
Zach Edey is a 22 y/o 7’4 rookie who has just 2 blocks in 6 games…he’s not patrolling the paint LOL at acting like he’ll be some Wemby stopper…Wemby stops himself anyways because he thinks he’s KD…Wemby went 4-13 from deep tonight against Utah he’s a poor shooter who wants to take jumpers all game Reed Sheppard has basically been invisible to begin his career while Edey has been given a starting role and still looks unimpressive
Age doesn't have much to do with it but Edey is clearly more NBA ready so I guess there is a correlation to age. But also Edey has an NBA ready body.
What? Being a rookie who is multiple years older is a huge advantage. What the hell are you talking about. The fact that he’s as old as he is and still completely awful is not a good sign
...you want Wemby shooting those shots because he's a real life cheat code if he can hit those over 36%. I watched every one of those and I would only say one of them he probably shouldn't have taken - and he was a few feet behind the line on a few of those and had a few that nearly went down but popped out. With 5% less rotation on this shot, he goes 6-13 last night. His shot is mostly online - when he misses it's normally short or too long but rarely off line....he's not the gifted scorer Durant is, but he has the skill set to be virtually unstoppable all the same just because of his combination of size and skill. Wish I had more insight into Reed's game. He has largely disappeared in his minutes and if he is a great shooter, you would never know it by the way he passes up 3 pointers.
What I do like about Edey is that even when he gets blown by his size allows for recovery as well as intimidation. He also sprints into low post position on offense and that has been helping Morant find space on the break, but also, it gets him deep on the block. Some foul trouble. But So far he's doin well, just not getting minutes.
People realise that Edey's older than Sengun, right? He's not some young prospect, and he's nowhere near developed enough at his age to be considered a future star by most benchmarks. He'd be a SUPER late developer if that ever happened.
His defense will probably limit him to "good backup center" and I don't think he has much room for further growth beyond what we're seeing now as a 22.5 year old dude with four years of college ball under his belt. Still, it looks like he may have a viable NBA career where he can actually play real minutes, which is a bit more than I initially expected.
