This is surprising to me. I thought that they would let this guy go based on who they have at that position and size and his summer performance.

The Chron also has an update on Mutumbo

With Dikembe Mutombo scheduled to sign on Monday, he and Landry would give the Rockets 20 players heading to Austin for training camp, with 17 contracts fully guaranteed, two more than the regular-season roster limit.

    hmm interesting..

Does this mean that Morey is going to be forced to make more trades before the start of the season.

Maybe guys like Lucas and Novak for draft picks and cash??

The Rockets and Landry had reached a negotiation impasse over the amount of money to be guaranteed in his minimum contract. ...agreed to a one-year deal, worth $427,000, with the Rockets offering an increase in the amount they would guarantee.

Looking at some of the numbers on the Patricia Bender site I'm guessing they've guaranteed his contract in the 100-150k range.

His contract still isn't fully guaranteed so cutting him could be a possibility.

Even if it was, they could still cut him.

My question is how many years is the contract. I'm guessing the Rox have at least one option year for next season.

Why would they sign him and then cut him?The management could have just cut him without paying him anything.

Signing Landry is a great move. Another asset that we can stash away on the D League for awhile, which arguably we could have done with Novak. Congrats to Carl, and here's to him dominating the D League.

    D League preidctions:

    16.5 pts
    9.0 reb
    55% FG

Man, I'm hoping he improves from his summer league performance. His Perdue highlights were really impressive. I want him to show more of his athleticism at this level.

You could say the same for Casey Jacobsen and Azubuikke last season.

novak makes their 15 man roster.

rafer, jl3, reed, sura, and harris are not in the rocket's future plans.

This makes no sense, whatsoever. He wasn't good in Summer League, and if they didn't sign him, they still kept his rights. Unless he was about to sign a big contract in Europe, there is no reason to give him a spot on the team.

I agree, very strange...but you never know what's going on behind the scenes. I think on this issue, management knows best.

Hmm perhaps they signed him to include him into some type of package deal?

I don't see anything odd at all about it. Sura, Lucas, Harris, Reed will be cut. Alston will be traded for a draft pick, TE, or bought out.

    PG Francis/James/Brooks
    SG McGrady/Head/Snyder
    SF Battier/Wells/Novak
    PF Scola/Hayes/Landry
    C Yao/Mutombo/Butler

The only reason people think this is strange is because they are in denial that Alston isn't in the team's plans at all.

I think you nailed the final 15. Another, less likely, possibility is we cut Novak and keep Rafer (for the time being).

I'm not as sold on Novak's future with the Rockets as everybody else seems to be...he hasn't shown a lick of anything when given minutes. Maybe that will change under Adelman, but I'm not sure how much time we're willing to spend grooming him now. He'll be a hell of a lot easier to move than Rafer, that's for sure.
