I know the Rockets compensated NY with a 2nd round pick, does anybody know if that is this year's or a future pick? This year s draft seems pretty deep. I would like for the Rockets to look for a REAL 3rd guard. Maybe a Troy Bell or Marcus Hatten who could give us something off the bench.
The 2nd rd pick is a future pick. I also would like to see if the Rockets could get another guard that actually is ok, but I'll take whatever help they can get, as long as its not Jason Collier's brother or something.
If Perkins stays in the draft, I'd like to see us go for him. Assuming he could eventually be a banging pf. He'd definitely be near-term hard fouls off the bench. The obvious comparison to a Griffin-Perkins rotation at PF is Wallace-Randolph. I know, I know, we have Mo, but we could still use a big body, who'll grab some boards and lean on (and Dude can lean) the oppositions' big boys. I think, in general, odds for success are greater of landing an impact guard, as a premium is typically paid (by that I mean talls are drafted higher and given the benefit of the doubt) for length. I think you could land Cuttino, many, many more times (even as remote as it is) than you could a Cato, in the second round. Of course the trick to it all, is if you land a Cato type player, by some miracle, just don't go out and ink him to a $45M, long-term contract immediately. Nobody would do that...I know....
i just have this strange feeling that perkins is going to be a huge bust...but you never know...what we need to be drafting for now is depth, i would think that an outside shooting guard would be a top priority, but when you re drafting that low in the 2nd round, you take the best player avaliable...period.
best available...agreed. I do suspect a media-type move on draft day. Not an outlandish trade for a top pick, I don't think we have it in us, unless Les wants to go into Luxury tax land and take all the bad contracts from Miami...which I don't see happening. I could see them making a move to land another player, probably a second round, maybe even a late first-round pick, just to add a player to add to the excitement, of the new coach, new arena, new uni's. Personal note: I doubt there will ever be a more exciting draft than '01, getting Eddie and the Morris too, was incredible!!! Definitely fun to watch and don't tell me you weren't excited...there may be two people on this entire board who wanted Jefferson over Griffin...if honesty was a requirement to post. Now we're not in near the dealing position we were then, but I think any move could be construed as exciting, especially if we grabbed a home-boy in the process (I'm not talking TJ or anyone specific), or perhaps a fallen top prospect such as Morris in '01.
not to ruin the fun, but somebody has to say that second round picks are not worth jack and are only slightly more valuable than undrafted free agents. mobley is the exception that proves the rule. carry on.
agree second round picks are not much better than undrafted free agents, *or* if early in the second round are not much worse than a first round pick...but I'm talking about making a deal to continue the momentum. IMO, the players' long-term success has little to do with the immediate excitement derived by making a deal. Think about Griffin and Morris deals, excitement was in abundance on draft day...two years later they are still young, still learning (more Griffin who we had higher expectations for) and neither have provided a consistent contribution to the team. BUT, on draft day, when those deals were made, there was excitement!!! The Rockets could put the flag in the ground and say, "See we gave you what you want..now go buy some tickets!" Conversely, and I agree on the limited value of a 2nd round pick, but if we just draft our player at our slot, ho-hum...unless they tab a guy that they can sell as the "best thing since sliced bread".
in the later part of the 1st rounds, teams with little space on the roster or a facing the tax tend to try to get out of the 1st round for a couple of seconds or future considerations. If he falls to the mid to late 1st. I would love for the Rockets to get Reece Gaines. He could back up Cat at the 2 and Steve at the point. While he's in the game he can handle running the team and let steve score.
The 2 guys I would like to see them get if they do not trade up is Marquis Daniels SG Auburn or Dahntay Jones SG Duke. Both are likey to be in the second round, but you never know where.
Missing the boat on Rashard still brings a tear to my eye...*sigh* However, things might of been completely different for the team, draft and free-agent wise, if we had taken him...there is a good amount of risk taking a High Schooler period--but in the second round? That's pretty much a blind "crap" shoot....
Just dont see a second rounder making this team, there will probably be a shift to more veteran back-ups as opposed to bringing on another project.
I want Perkins. Our 2nd rounder probably wont even make the team, so we might as well take a risk. Perkins as potential to be a player the Rockets need, a big banger at the 4. I say, why not if hes there.
I'd love to somehow trade into the late first round and grab Reece Gaines, a 6-6 point guard who can really pass the ball well ans is also a solid defender. Alot of people think he'll fall becomes he isn't amazing at anything, just solid everywhere. Anyone know what we could offer for a pick in the 20s? What about Mobley, 2nd rounder, Drew obligation to Portland for Derek Anderson and the #23? Probably just dreaming.
IMO, we are going to draft for needs in the second round. The two glarring needs we have are backup-SG and backup-PG. We also need some depth in the 4 and 5 spots. I really like Justin Hamilton (6-4.25 and a 6-11 wing span!) PG out of Florida. He's a senior, good shooter 56% FG and 40% 3pt and is a relentless defender with a 38 inch verticle. He's not going to look for his shot that much, but can score when called upon. If we draft Justin, say goodbye to the dribble mania. Kirk Penny (6-6)would be a refreshing change to Hawkins. Good player with loads of experience (international and college) that shows a good touch. other possibilities: Keith Bogans Kyle Korver Erwin Dudley Mario Austin Carlos Delfino Jerome Beasley Uche Nsonwu Marquis Estill and last but certainly not least, Marqius Daniels
How about moving this discussion to the draft forum? Any risky foreign players with contracts to play out that we wouldn't have to put on the roster this year? It worked out for the Spurs.
