I watched the game on League Pass last night so I had to listen to the Cleveland announcers. Matt Goukas said during the game that he had spoken to members of the Rockets and that the organization was disappointed in Yao this season and that they had hoped he would have have made much larger strides this year in his play and conditioning. If this is true, hopefully we see some adjustments soon to get the best out of him and the team.
I wasn't talking about trades. I'm talking about adjustments to the way the team plays. And I'm not the one who said it. I'm just reporting what Matt Goukas stated he was told from someone in management. Thought it was interesting. Jeff, maybe you have some insight on whether it's true or not...
I noticed Goukas's comments as well. I am not an insider but suspect the root of the comment is in the expectation of Yao moving from a 90% finesse / 10% power player to more of a 50-50 finesse/power ratio. The level of physical domination is not very present...yet. Also, Yao seems less agressive than he did in the Asian Championships were he was really fiesty often showing emotion I have rarely seen so far this season. He played especially emotionally versus Japan as they were smaller but played very physically against him. Yao's 03-04 numbers are up but his FG% and FT% are down. Again, I think it's adjusting to a new system and it's probably taking the team longer than expected.
since when did hope from the organization make a player better? if anything it makes players worse. One of the common attributes for the team is that once players get paid big, their performance drops. That's why cat is the only player that does better than what he gets paid, whereas mooch, cato, taylor and francis have deteriorated once they get offered money. Therefore, if the rox want yao to do better, they should take away his money and not offer him the max when his contract extension comes up. of course then he will leave, so i think the rox will be screwed whatever they do.
I really think he is tired. He seems to have dead legs. After a couple of trips down the floor, he's bent over, hands on knees. I also think that after so much build up and hype over the last couple of years, he's mentally exhausted. I honestly think he's tired, homesick, and really just wants to go home and rest. He hasn't really had a chance to do that in the last two years.
Well, this is the first time Yao has had to play for an extended period of time with all that added weight he gained during the off-season. Perhaps carrying all that weight up and down the floor has finally gotten to him. I understand management being a disappointed in him. I’m a little disappointed as well. I just hope they don’t completely lose faith in him.
I think the 2 1st rounders and Dunleavy. Dunleavy can immediately come in and play the SF. Trade the draft picks for a higher draft pick and get a legit passer.
Does this mean we would rebuild or would we be going back to the Guard Oriented Team? If its back to the Guards then we don't need a Playmaking Point Guard or a decent Center. The Steve and Mobes Show can give us all the entertainment we need, just not a championship.
I want to know! Charvo if you think that Yao Ming is worth Dunleavy and TWO FIRST round draft picks. What is the real reason that you want to get rid of him? It cant be for Basketball reasons because you believe he is so valuable, just what is it??
Yao is playing basketball at a high level in the off season then coming back here and dealing with the NBA, and it's physical play. So my guess is that he'll always hit a "wall" during the regular season.
I know Yao needs to improve and he's tired etc etc, but funny that "the organization" is unhappy with Yao and no mention of Steve Fancy.
Well, JVG said that he held Yao to a "higher standard". Apparently, he is okay by normal standard, not the "higher" one. --daoshi
It is a good news for Yao. He can leave the Rox and find a good team for himself then play well. I believe many team want him and he will get a good pay. let the guard rolling the ball and become the lottery team again.
