Given the current NBA standings the Rockets are in position to have three #1 draft picks. 1. They would get their own pick (probably at #13 unless they are really lucky with the ping pong balls). 2. They would get Orlando's #1 if it is no better than #16 (Orlando does have an option to defer to a later year) 3. They will get Milwaukee's #1 which should be somewhere around #21. If they Rockets were to pass the Timberwolves for the #8 seed, they would have to give their own #1 pick to Vancouver. Minnesota would then move into the lottery; however, the T-wolves have forfeited their number one pick. This would move Orlando from #16 to #15 where the Rockets would no longer qualify for their pick. Bottom line: By passing the T-wolves for the 8 seed the Rockets could very well go from having the 13, 16 & 21 picks to only having the 21 pick! ------------------
Are you sure that they do not count Minny's spot, even though they do not get to pick? ------------------ "We messed with the Bull, and we got the horns." -- Larry Brown "quote" from AirBullard.com
It's been mentioned in the College/Draft forum that Orlando's pick does not have to be their own. They could easily send someone else's 1st rounder our way, since I believe NY and someone else owes them. If we get a pick from Orlando, I expect it to be in the 20s as well. Maybe we can package them together to move ourselves up to 15 or something. ------------------
It doesn’t matter. Orlando has the option to use the Dallas’ pick to satisfy this obligation. Currently Dallas’ pick is at 22-23 slot.
Who would you draft with those 3 picks? I think we should try to get Ken Johnson, T. Morris, Loren Woods or Haywood depending on which one is still on the board. ------------------ President of the Steve Francis, Jamal Crawford,Larry Hughes, and Charles Woodson fan club.
Without a doubt Troy Murphy. I don't know how high he will go but he would be the perfect SF for the Rockets. I think he is like 6'8 so I don't know if he would play 3 or 4 in the NBA but I'm thinking he would be a 3 since he is so athletic. ------------------
Your title does not align with your post. The pick due from the Francis trade will have to be closed out eventually, so that pick being lost is a known element. The Orlando pick might be deferred until the future, but it would not be lost as your title states. I understand your intent in pointing out these matters, but the picks are not lost as you originally stated. Mango ------------------ Get it right or just don't do it! I'm not sure the "loss" of these picks is that big of a loss. Does anyone think this draft class is going to go any deeper than last year's week-ass class. The dominant view right now is that a guy that played in Europe for 3 years is going to take rookie of the year (Marc Jackson). I don't see this class being any better. ------------------
Cat5, Excellent point with Orlando's "Dallas pick". They very well could convey that pick to the Rockets. Given that Orlando owes three #1's over the next three years there is no telling what they will do. However, if they pick at #15 you can bet the Rockets won't get that one! Mango, The title should read "could lose two #1 draft picks THIS YEAR". Or, I could have titled it "By making the playoffs the Rockets could have their obligation to convey their #1 pick to Vancouver accelerated and could have their first round draft pick due from Orlando deferred". Call it author's prerogative to put details in the body. Anyway, isn't the title meant to capture attention? Hydra, I have not seen an "official" interpretation of the ruling, but common sense tells me if a team is picking the 15th player in the draft then it will count as the 15th pick (not the 16th pick with one "pass"). ------------------
I think this draft will be alot deeper then last years. It will be comparable to the Francis draft. ------------------ "norm, would you like to buy an indian scalp ? This deal isn't gonna make or break me Norm, so don't jerk me around." Harry Carey "Norm, if I had a mohawk scalp, I wouldn't be sitting here talking to you."

The Orlando Sentinel reported that Orlando will be sending the New York Knicks pick to us this offseason to pay the debt. They pick around 20 and are not in much danger of getting protected. Assuming we make the playoffs, we'll have 3 picks all around 17-22, with 1 of them (not necessarily the best) going to Vancouver. On the one hand, everyone says this will be a deep draft (of course, they said the Francis draft would be weak, and it's been the best in years), but what can you get that low in the draft? Considering the cap space the Rockets always want to clear, I wouldn't be surprised if they traded one. Finally, don't expect to see that pick from Chicago. It's top-20 protected till 2004. ------------------ RealGM Gafford Art Artisan Cakes
JuanValdez, good point. The conditions on the pick we owe Vancouver is we have to send them ours or a pick within 2 if we make the playoffs, right? So presumably, if we were to finish around 16, we could trade the Milwaukee and NY picks for the 18 and satisfy the obligation that way, right? We might have a shot at drafting a potential starter, after all. I was writing off our pick this year in the hopes of making the playoffs. ------------------
This draft coming up is supposedly one of the deeper ones in recent history. Now if Eddie Griffen would come out..... ------------------ ``It's bigger than chalupas,''.....Wesley Person
