That’s the question that keeps swirling around my mind as I stand next to Gersson Rosas, the Houston Rockets’ Director of Player Personnel. Since my company for the evening is a highly-respected member of the Rockets’ front office, I assumed we’d be watching the club’s home opener from some sweet seats behind the bench, or maybe even one of Toyota Center’s sweet suites. But, no, we’re standing just outside the home team’s tunnel and this is where we’ll be for the entire game, semi-obstructed view and all (at various times security personnel, fans and even the Rockets Power Dancers make it difficult to see the far end of the court in its entirety). This is the vantage point from which Rosas views every Rockets home game. The question is: Why? “From a scout’s point of view, you want to be as close to the floor as possible in order to fully comprehend all of the intricacies within game,” explains Rosas. “For example, our coaching staff develops a game plan and you not only want to see if our guys carry it out, but in what manner they go about doing it. You want to see the interactions between the coach and players, the players as a team, and the team versus the opponent. These intricacies reveal important insights, both good and bad, into our personnel. [/rquoter]
His comments bout Tracy are extremely interesting. Its amazing in the fact that this is how basketball is meant to be played and when you grow up playing basketball this is the mentality your meant to have as a person. It takes 5 to the maximum. Yet we slaughter him for it so much and every average fan does.
I'd never criticize T-Mac for looking to make the right basketball play for his teammates. The problem is he only understand how to do it with the ball in his hands. If he doesn't have the ball in his hands, is he trying to make his teammates better? No, he's just standing around and taking it easy. That's not how basketball is meant to be played.
I like this part for the people who dont understand exactly how much Battier means to our overall team defense. I really dont understand why this doesnt seem plainly obvious to everyone...I guess when all you watch is the flashy offensive plays, you can't understand how much goes into a good strong team defense.
Barry has not looked good at all the past 2 or 3 games. And just before that, I was hyping him up as a brilliant pick up. I really hope that doesn't turn out to be a bust.
There's something odd about the "scouts point of view" comment in the opening post. In the tunnel?? I guess Bird and Isiah did that as GMs, right? But Red Auerbach sat dead-center about basket level, which is where I'd sit, because i guess they like to sell those seats. I suppose the comment takes into consideration he has plenty of game video to watch later, but you cannot simulate actually being near the court through video, so during the game it's best to be in a position you can't replicate later. I guess.
I'm not the least bit surprised that Barry is having a hard time.Honestly,you can't expect much from a 37 year old SG who can't take on against younger players who have more talent than him despite his experience and smarts.
I'm hoping that, like Battier, he looks better when the other guys are doing their job. We need better spacing, movement, and passing from all 5 guys on the court.
This is also exactly the type of argument that puts the Rudy Gay vs Battier argument to bed. We have Ron Artest at the moment who is arguably better then Rudy Gay and our defence is in shambles. Battier is clearly the backbone of our league leading defence last year and every other year his been here. Its the type of identity that we have come to expect as fans. I also hope this type of comment will help fans understand why Ron should come off the bench. Battier works better with the 1st teamers
Tracy is definitely a amazing playmaker on the offensive end, but I hope he can take over the offense more frequently.
Regarding Brent Barry, when you age, you become half a step slower in terms of both reaction and speed and agility. You add the fact that he is not famaliar with his team mates and thier comfort zone, I can see problems like making bad passes surfacing. This HOPEFULLY would be a temporary thing.
Enjoyed the interview and the article. This is unique and refreshing perspective that isn't usually available in mass media outlets. Thanks. Also, I agree about Adelman's value to the team - his proven track record, his knack for utilizing player's strengths and adjusting to what they got. He's a good coach for this team, but he does have his challenges ahead. I think he can make it fit - it happened last year (despite underperforming in the playoffs ... again).
