On Friday, October 29, the Rockets invited the Sunshine Kids and the children from the Ronald McDonald House in Houston for an afternoon of video games, movie watching, and appearances by Clutch and Rockets’ rookie Patrick Patterson. Kathy Scalf, Family Activities Coordinator at the Ronald McDonald House, characterized the value that trips like these play in the lives of children facing difficult obstacles. “They are very excited. For the kids to get an afternoon out of the Ronald McDonald House, get a break, get away from just being at the hospital and medical treatments, it just gives them a fun afternoon and just a normal day that they normally don’t get.” The children and their families met Patterson and Clutch at the Edward’s Houston 23 Marq*e & Imax to watch the movie Secretariat. Prior to its start, the children posed for pictures with the player and mascot and enjoyed the cinema’s arcade before finally taking their seats. It’s hard to say who received the better reception but the kids were clearly excited for the visit from both Rockets representatives. Scalf indicates that the Ronald McDonald House has been helping people in Houston for 30 years and that “It’s for children with a life-threatening illness being treated at one of the medical center facilities.” While the children clearly enjoyed the experience and will have photos and ticket stubs to commemorate the occasion, the moment was not lost on Patterson who also took something away from the experience. “Just humbleness. I have a totally new respect level. You know, you see these kids, sick kids, who still smile every single day,” he said. “Given their condition, their state of health, you know, they still look at the big picture, at the bright side. And their families are extremely supportive. And I just want them to have fun and want them to smile.” There certainly were a lot of smiles at Edwards on Friday, but it wasn’t just limited to the Sunshine Kids and children from the Ronald McDonald House. “For me, as Family Activities Coordinator, to see the kids just have a smile on their face, just to not have to be in the hospital and that environment,” Scalf said. “To get them out and see them enjoy fun a little bit of time, it’s priceless.” Sounds like quite a treat. I hadn't had any coffee. I was wondering why rockets.com had an article about Martin's extramarital affairs and what it had to do with the NBA Cares program. I read the the title as: "[Rockets.com]Martin Affair=-=(NBA Cares)"
