This isn't really the topic of the story, but this quote from Rick Adelman stood out to me:

    http://www.nba.com/rockets/news/the_power_three_rockets_relyi_2009_10_21.html

    [rquoter]
“We have to have ball movement,” insists Rockets’ Head Coach Rick Adelman. “We must have it or we’re not going to get good shots. Carl Landry is probably our best post-up player and Luis Scola can do some damage in there but they’re nothing like Yao, so it’s imperative we find other ways to do it. The ball’s got to move for us to get that accomplished.”[/rquoter]

I thought last year that Landry could develop into a formidable post-up player for us. It's interesting that Adelman would say he's "probably our best post-up player", putting him even ahead of Scola. He's either very high on Landry's post-up game or not so impressed by Scola's post-up game, compared to most fans.

Carl has shown a nice touch in there from time to time. His height probably makes it a bit hard on him. He didn't do a lot of damage in the post last year, he must have worked on it over the summer.

Landry has a couple things working in his favor in the post, compared to Scola.

When he faces up from 8-10 feet, he's got more effective moves. He has an effective spin move on his drives, and he can score over players instead of having to get around them. He's also better at turning and shooting -- Scola is more of a catch-and-shoot jump shooter.

I'd also add that Landry can jump higher and is probably getting easier shots than Scola. The degree of difficulty on many of Scola's baskets in the post has always amazed me.

That's true. Scola has more moves and better footwork on the low block, but his limitations make it harder for him to finish.

    A fair consideration, I think.

Every yr, landry you can see a nice improvement in landy's game....His post game has gotten much better than last yr just by looking at the preseason....His mid range jumper is money, and his finishing around the basket is second to none on this team...I like scola also, but I really cant remember seeing landry miss lay-ups....cause he dunks everything

I'm not buying it, at least not yet.

Give Scola the ball and put him in the post area, I'm very confident the ball is going in the basket. Can't say I feel the same way about Landry. He did develop a good looking spin move, but I need to see more games to be convinced that he's the better post-up player.

Scola is by far the best post up player now that Yao is out. I love Landry, but he doesn't have low post moves, he dunks.

i think he's talking about efficiency....adelman, or maybe it was morey, said not too long ago that they told Landry if he got the ball in the post it better not come back out unless they double him. They feel like he scores or gets fouled most of the time he attempts to score downt here. Scola does it prettier and gets more touches, but Landry has a better %, he just scores "ugly" sometimes.

Scola's got some nice foot work and actual go to moves, but he lacks the ability (no hang time and athleticism) to go into guys to create contact and either finish or get fouled. So he either scores or misses. Landry seems to either score or get fouled.

So i would not take it as a shot to Scola. It's sort of debating Tmac and Yao initially. Tmac scored, but Yao was more efficient, so they urged him to shoot more.

there is no doubt that scola is better in the post. more polished, more experinced, led national team to an olympic medal by working in the post. Adelman knows what he is going to get from scola (which is a really good player) but Adelman sees the potential in Mandry and wants to give him the confidence. This is Adelman giving Landry the confidence to do his thing..

    Also from the article:

    [rquoter]
“I think it comes from the confidence that the coaches have given me this year,” says Battier. “They told me, ‘You have to think of yourself like you did your senior year at Duke and let it fly. Just keep shooting. When you’re cold, shoot ‘til you’re hot and when you’re hot, milk it.’ So I just want to be really aggressive, especially from the corner three-point spot because that’s an area we can score a lot of points. I’ve made that shot a lot in my career – it’s been good to me – so with the confidence that the coaches have given me, I’m looking for it.”[/rquoter]

Hopefully increased offensive production is something we get from Battier consistently over the season.

Scola posting people up usually results in amazing footwork, and a skillful layup.

Landry posting you up usually results in average footwork, and a strong facial.

With that being said, I like both of them. It's like Yin meets Yang, except we have both on our team.

Hopefully yes,but over relying on outside shooting won't get it done. He isn't much of a postup guy,but it's important to try to get to the FT line.

Adelman must not have watched a lot of Scola's play internationally. Scola's a far better post up player... I love Landry, but I think he relies more on athleticism. He has the talent and athleticism to be excellent, just at this point I still go with Scola.

2 different styles of post play. Very lucky we have both on this team.
