Rockets coach Rick Adelman said the team will take a cautious approach and has not set a return date for center Yao Ming.

Yao went through a light practice Thursday at Toyota Center, saying his ankle isn't completely healed but "it's getting close."

"The big key is going to be the more he gets on the court, the more things he does, does he have soreness, doesn't he have soreness?" Adelman said. "That's the thing I want to wait and see."

Yao said his target is to rejoin the team for Tuesday's game against the Detroit Pistons. Adelman said he and Yao have not discussed the exact date of his return.

The plan is for Yao to get some extra work this weekend while the team is on the road. He could begin full practice next week.

"He'll get his chance next week," Adelman said. "They'll do a lot of work with him over the weekend and then next week we'll have a chance to practice."

The 7-foot-6 center has been sidelined since Nov. 10 with a sprained and bruised left ankle.

Adelman said Yao will most likely have a limit on minutes when he returns.

Yao said he is experiencing some weakness in the ankle but no pain.

"I can't say my ankle is 100 percent, but it's getting close," Yao said.

Yao returned to the court for the first time Tuesday, taking part in the Rockets' shootaround and saying "every step is moving ahead."

I have no doubt he could be playing now.....it is not like it was a severe ankle sprain.

I don't think Rick wants him back under the old limitations.

agreed. i think everyone involved wants him back at 100% rather than do this dumb minute limitation.

The whole situation is pathetic. Play him or trade him, but this saga must be brought to an end.

The limitation honestly did nothing to prevent injury, why should they keep it up?...

WOW, when other posters would bring up the comparison I'd ignore it almost trying to convince myself that it wasn't the case but that article reads almost IDENTICAL to the articles that were written last December.

Kind of makes me miss the old days when they would inject a guy with a shot, kill the pain and get a player on the floor. Now these guys make more money than ever and they won't play with a bad toenail. :)

Yao should forget about playing for recover.

It did no good to himself and the team.

They reported a bone bruise in the ankle, bone bruises are caused by compression, the ankle is in compression at all times when Yao is standing, running walking etc...

They can take weeks or months to heal, you want this full healed on a guy his size before he come back or he will aggravate the injury.

Does Yao know how to swim? surely an alternative cardiovascular exercise such as swimming would be better than running on the altered gravity treadmill bull****.

This times infinity; he got injured WITH the limit (this year) and WITHOUT it (in past years). What's the difference? What's the risk? Nothing, I would say.

He's gonna need to play at least 32 minutes a game to have some sort of a positive impact.
