The thread isn't really related to the trade talk or future direction of the team. I just wanted to take a look at which Rockets are assisting which teammates in games prior to the all-star break.

The following table illustrates this interaction between Rockets teammates. The rows refer to scorers, while the columns refer to assisting passers. For example, the cell for Trevor Ariza’s row and Aaron Brooks’s column indicates that Brooks assisted an Ariza made basket 51 times.

Perhaps a more telling way of representing this information would be to show assist-rates when two players are on the floor together. For instance, instead of showing that Brooks assisted 51 Ariza baskets so far this season, I may want to know how many assists to Ariza he gets for every 36 minutes (it could be per minute, or per 48 minutes... doesn't really matter) they share on the floor. That’s what the following table shows:

    A few comments:

    • Lowry does a nice job distributing to all his teammates when he shares the floor with them.
    • Landry is strictly a finisher.
    • It is interesting that, per-minute, Hayes assists more Brooks baskets than any player other than Lowry. Brooks has the ball in his hands quite a bit and has to create most of his shots, but he does get some easy looks from Hayes backdoor passes or hand offs from the high post
    • It is interesting that Brooks has a higher assist rate to Landry, while Lowry has a higher assist rate to Scola. Brooks does a pretty good of penetrating in half-court sets and finding Landry on the baseline. I think Lowry isn’t asked to create as much offense in half-court situations. Lowry does excel in transition, and Scola is a great running partner. Perhaps those pairs are better suited together?

Data in this post was tabulated from the play-by-play CSV files provided by Ryan Parker at BasketballGeek.com.

    This is cool stuff Durv.

But I would like to see data where a pass leads to a wide open shot etc.- make or miss.

And also how many missed shots vs makes there were off those passes.

I'd like to see that data also.

I wonder if there is anywhere it is kept?

I really like what you did up there in the chart, and would love to see what better shooters in the lineup would do for both AB and Lowry.

I am sure someone working for the Rockets has it on his computer. But what is publicly available is limited to information recorded in the play-by-plays.

Thanks, durvasa. As always, thought provoking stuff. Just at a glance, the chart tells me that Scola is great moving without the ball and getting to open areas in the offense, then hitting the jumper.

I have been planning a similar post regarding overall assists. I don't have actual numbers in front of me, but has anyone else noticed that with less than 20 assists we nearly always lose, with 20-22 we win a bit better than half the time, and with 22+ we almost always win. This trend has continued for the last few years. Anyone want to make a graph for me? LOL!

It is interesting that Brooks/Landry seem better suited for half-court while Lowry/Scola are better in the open court.

Ariza's assist rates aren't too shabby, and I imagine they're only improving as he's visibly trying to become a driver not a chucker.

Who would have thought that Kyle Lowry is good at passing the ball....

arent these the true assists that morey refers to on his twitter every once and a while? i actually started trying to go through all the rox games a few weeks ago and track these but it was just way too time consuming.

    Great observation:

    Code:
    [B]assists win loss[/B]
      30+ 3 0
     25-29 10 1
     20-24 9 8
     15-19 5 12
     10-14 0 2
      5-9 0 3

The Rockets are 13-1 when they get 25+ assists, and only 14-25 when they get less than 25 assists.
