Rockets and Longhorns - the common ground

Sadly, my two favorite teams share one horrible common ground . . . plenty of talent, not enough toughness and coaching.

    TOUGHNESS:
Rudy has to figure out a way to convince Steve and Cuttino to lead on offense by passing first and to lead on defense by pressuring the perimeter. People forget that Jordan and Pippen were dominant in large part because of their stifling perimeter defense, which created easy scoring opportunities. A journeyman named Hawkins can play defense like a mutha. Our millionaire pretty boys refuse to get into someone's mug. the nba. it's fantastic. Ming needs to throw a couple of elbows on rebounds and get called for charging. We need to send Ming over to the Texans practice and let him hit a couple of tackling sleds. Maybe that will get the message across.

    COACHING:
    1. Rudy has to use Hawkins better. There is no doubt. Hawkins is a stopper. Quicker than Elie. Probably as tough. Many of us coaching wannabe's suggested that Hawkins guard Payton, but Rudy didn't figure that one out until 4 minutes left in the game. And viola, we go on a run that closes the gap or at least stops the bleeding. AHHHH. WTF. Note to rudy. Hawkins should be assigned to defend the best pg, sg or sf on the other team for the rest of the season.

    2. Griffin couldn't miss. Why didn't he get more shots? Why would you not go to him in the low post every time? Why did he have to heave two three pointers at the end of the half to get more shots? Why didn't he get any touches in the 2nd half? Either Rudy didn't recognize the opportunity or Francis and Mobley didn't execute the plays. Assuming it's the latter, Rudy needs to bend the will of Francis and Mobley. If that means pulling them out of the game for failing to pass, freakin do it. Get your point across. All the great coaches do it. Jackson yells at Kobe for not passing. Brown gets on Iverson for just about everything. Moochie and Hawkins can feed the post. Teach the pretty boys a lesson.

    3. Why play zone against Seattle in the 3rd quarter when they're shooting lights out? oh, I know, throw kerosene into the fire. Maybe if they're wide open, they will have too much time to shoot.

It is our right to question. It is the Rockets obligation to answer.

    Go Rockets. Hook'em Horns.

Agreed. Although, Horns may have turned their season around and the Rockets are 2-2. I think the Rockets can make the playoffs.

The situations are similar, yet have a couple of differences. In basketball, the head coach is where it all starts and ends.

In basketball, any good coach will have a great support staff, as a head coach in football must be a great administrator and delegate authority.

With the Horns it comes down to assistants.

With the Rockets its either Rudy, or the team does not listen or buy into his system, or a combination.

I think Rudy has his flaws, but I do not think its all on him. BUT IT IS ON HIM TO CORRECT IT.

    Fire GD!!!

Come over where??? In all honesty, only time will tell, but I think many people will be shocked to see how Simms career will pan out.

He suffers from the same thing that BJ, Roy, Cedric & many other skilled players on that team do... lack of coaching. Isn't it interesting how these guys were all world coming in and we saw a lot of potential as freshmen and they plateaued so quickly.

If it were one or two guys, I would say its players not living up to expectation, when it is the rule and not the exception, you have to look at the coaches.

Davis might just save his job if he calls the remaining games like he did the Nebraska game. Why do we wait until the Nebraska game to feed the ball into Roy? If we call the same game against OU our offense doesn't go 3 and out the entire 3rd quarter and we hold onto the lead and keep our d rested. Why dammit!!??

I refuse to believe that our (OU) defense would simply allow Roy to keep catching the ball. We're better than that.

Also, comparing the Rockets, my favorite sports team of all time, to the Longhorns??! That was uncalled for. I understand you're a UT fan, but come on man, that's no reason to offend the rest of us! :)

    excellent post.

it just seems to me that rudy either a.) refuses to get tough w/ his players or b.) the players dont listen to a damn thing he says.

for once, i would love to see rudy yell at cat or steve (especially cat) everytime they throw up a prayer-of-a-shot. if they do it a few times, yank 'em out of the game. i want to see rudy get in their faces, if someone has the hot hand, i wanna see rudy calling plays for that person. pretty simple, right?

Next year, Young will be QB and they will actually have a chance to beat Oklahoma. Young can create and won't look like Chris Simmstaverde on the run.

Once the Rockets get Bill Walton in the fold and Rudy T out, then they'll actually have a chance to win.

    WALTON . HEAD COACH

    BELIEVE IT!!!!!!:p :D :p

Yeah, we sure wouldn't want someone to go into Nebraska and throw for 420 yards.

I wouldn't blame it all on Rudy. There were times where the camera went on Rudy after a bad play and Rudy would be turning around with his hands up in the air with an "why I do even try" look on his face. i felt sorry for him.

There has been a lot of praise from players within the program as well as coaches on Vince, however, do not be shocked if he is battling Mock for the job. I am pro-Vince, but that is just a simple truth. As it now stands, the coaches want to make sure no games are lost in the early going and they feel that Mock is their best chance. That could & hopefully will change, but Mock really is not a corpse, so I would not have a problem with it early on if necessary.
