http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/merc...ts/16315350.htm Talks about 1995 where the Rockets 2 Stars (Horry and Dream) got hurt and Rockets made big trade for Clyde and ended up just making playoffs and starting that sick run through it as everyone got healthy at the right time. Hopefully this could be a pick me up and Hopefully it will happen again .
It will never ever happen. This team has the talent to do it (when healthy). But our weakness is that we have a coach that just can't coach. JVG can't make adjustments and his lack of interest in the offensive side of the game is unforgivable. If we could get Rudy T back to coach this bunch, it might be possible. Rudy was the wrong coach for the likes of Mobley, Francis, and Cato, but with the the personnel this team has got now, he fits us a hell of alot better than JVG does.
Thanks for trying to cheer us all up! The difference is that they were all healthy together the season before when they won the championship. It wasn't a matter of gelling together and knowledge of how to win. It was more about just being able to play. Our team needs to be completely healthy and gel in order for us to get anywhere. With key members gone all the time, they aren't going to learn anything...
I agree. JVG is what this team needed when he came here. We needed discipline. We needed to re-shape the team, and change the culture. He is eactly the kind of coach that makes a young team mature. But there's another breed of coach that gets a mature team from excellent to champion. Despite that, if Red Auerbach was resurrected and put on the Rockets bench he wouldn't be able to help this team be respecteable without Yao and T-Mac. We had just beaten the Spurs without T-mac. JVG is doing all that's possible, and is doing as good a job as anyone in the league can with such a ****ty talent pool. You can not take 40M (Yao, Mac, Snyder) out of a team's salary cap and expect a team to win. T-Mac and Yao are the BEST 40M. Take any team in the league, and pick their WORST 40M worth of contracts and see if they will be any different than we are. No way. It's ludicrous to even consider it.
"JVG can't coach blah blah blah"... Did you guys see us destroy San Antonio? It's always the same. Blame the coach, blame the coach, blame the coach. Guess what guys? You think Greg Popovich is an awesome coach? I snuck over to various Spurs forums after the game and they were ALL whining about how Popovich sucks, can't coach, has no good substitution patterns etc etc. Why don't we all lay down the collective crack pipes and realize that no coach is going to make a team of scrubs contenders?
As a reply to the original topic, I think this team can and should make a psychotic trade right now. Something ridiculous like acquiring Clyde. Let's get Jason Kidd. Antawn Jamison. Sam Cassell. Chris Webber. Something unbelievably risky. That's what the Rockets did when they got Clyde. Everyone was saying he was gone downhill and had no shot at a title. We ignored them, got Clyde, he was rejuvenated, kept us afloat, then when things came together, we were unbeatable with everyone healthy. Unfortunately, it's a lot to ask. It worked once, doesn't mean it will work again. Plus, JVG and Morey are NOT risk-takers by any stretch of the imagination.
I remember! But this time there will be no trade. But when Tmac and Yao comesback, guess who will pick up his game? Bonzi Wells! He should know better that his stock has got to be on the money this season or else his value will decline drastically. Almost the same situation, Clyde and Bonzi came from jailblazers but the difference is Bonzi is already with the team. Go Rockets!
I'm really surprised at some of the people here, saying JVG can't coach offense without Yao or T-Mac. How many games so far have we played without our two superstars? Exactly 0, and in the Clippers game where Yao went down in 5 minutes we managed to stay in the game for pretty much the whole way until the last couple of minutes, so I can't see why so many people are blaming JVG for not being able to coach this team. They keep saying 'bring in replacements!', I'm sorry, who is there to replace JVG out there? Sloan? Riley? Jackson? They all happen to be something called a contract with their respective teams.
