http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2054529&num=0 (excerpt) "I've taken a lot of crap from a lot of people," said Rocker, who racked up 88 saves, more than 330 strikeouts and a 3.42 ERA in six seasons with the Braves, Indians, Rangers and Devil Rays. "Probably more than anybody in the history of this sport. I know Hank [Aaron] and Jackie [Robinson] took a good deal of crap, but I guarantee it wasn't for six years. I just keep thinking: How much am I supposed to take?" Please, just go away.
Wow. Seriously, just wow. I didn't think there was anything that could surprise me in the world of sports. But that quote actually caused me to gag.
Yeah, I can guarantee the crap they took wasn't for 6 years, too. It was probably a lot longer. There are just some dense humans on this planet.
Huh, it's still popular to bash Rocker? Well I guess so, since he committed the most heinous crime out there -- stereotyping people. Man, that's worse that double homicide. Give him the death penalty. Funny how people get their jollies from piling on.
Trader, do you not see the stupidity of that comment right there? People are starting to lay off of bashing Rocker, but then he just went out there and make a comment like that. Hell, when I first read the title and the post I was like "who"? Then I remember what he did. We are talking about him not for what he done in the past, but what he just did, which is talking out of his rear end.
There's a lot of things that people do that just don't really puzzle me. Different ideologies, opinions, etc...but defending John freakin' Rocker? Why?
I suppose if I stereotyped people all the time and said inflamatory things, I'd probably empathize with Rocker as well. Stereotypers, when will the oppression of these noble people stop?
He just claimed that he's gone through more adversity than Hank Aaron and Jackie Freaking Robinson. Why are you defending him? Do you agree with him?
You're the one who started this stupid thread to complain about how John Rocker "won't go away". If you were really tired of him getting attention, starting a thread about his dumb ass seems like an odd choice. Trader Jorge said: "Funny how people get their jollies from piling on." It doesn't look to me like he's defending Rocker, it looks like he's making fun of people who feel the need to prove what good little pilgrims they are by bemoaning the inanities Rocker spouts when someone sticks a microphone in his face. OK, we get it. You are not a racist and never have racist thoughts. Swell, no further proof will be required, so you will not have to start another stupid thread like this one, EVAR.
I guess we should have stopped bashing on Hitler after 1943 (6 years of European war) as well? That was pretty much not "fresh thinking" by that point as well, and we wouldn't want to call out someone like that at the sake of Trader_Jorge's rules of proper bashing etiquete, after all. How gauche.
John Rocker use to be Bon Jovi's bass player, until one day he decided to stuff Bon Jovi's pet gerbil (named "Pascal") in his own rectum. Then Bon Jovi got really mad and tried to make John Rocker give the gerbil back, but John Rocker refused to do so, claiming it was "stuck, like a black guy in prison." When Bon Jovi threatened to call the authorities, John Rocker expelled the gerbil so violently that it smashed through a wall and into Bret Michael's dressing room, where it landed in a deli tray. C.C. Deville, unaware of the event, accidentally ate the gerbil believing it was a chocolate Easter bunny. John Rocker then, reportedly, said "That gerbil was moving faster than a Puerto Rican with the cops on his tail." That was when John Rocker got kicked off the Monsters of Rock tour, because Rob Halford complained that Rocker's blatant racism was making a mockery of heavy metal. Rocker responded virulently in the press; "Rob Halford is just mad because I got to the gerbil first. That guy wears lots of leather stuff. With spikes. I'm going to be a baseball player instead of a bass player." After a brief stint as Pope, professional baseball player, and action hero, John Rocker returned to the sport he knew and loved as a child: being talked about.
What bothers me is that the article in question, in bringing Rocker back from his relative obscurity, is such an incredible fluff piece. The author mentions the media advisor he's hired who carefully pores over every detail of interviews he gives, granting only the positive ones, and the author seems to have curtailed his article accordingly. Note that the article never quotes Rocker's original statements, the cause (rightfully so) of his downfall. This article helps to bolster Rocker's image, expaining his earlier vitriol as immaturity, youthful indiscretion? What? Six years later, as demonstrated by that ridiculous quote and the article in question, he doesn't seem to have changed all that much. That's why one should be upset, because ESPN chose to bring that to our attention. But you're right, Brian Kagy. This BS should never have been reported in the first place. At least six years ago a sports fan could say: yeah, he's a bigot, but at least he can throw. Now he's a bigot with a bum shoulder. Since when did ESPN cover the independent leagues?
BrianKagy, please edit my post to say something amusing if you can think of anything, if not that's OK too, I'm sure backseat moderating and lecturing admins never got anyone banned around here.
It's totally fresh when he keeps giving us brand new material to work with. I don't think it's that people want to bash him, but more that we're amazed how a person can repeatedly make himself look so stupid over and over and over and actually b**** about it.
Thank you. It's not like this was said six years ago and I'm just bringing it up now. I started a thread because some idiot said something that I perceived to be moronic and outlandish. I'd have done the same had the subject not been about race. I didn't realize that was against the rules here.
