LONDON, England (CNN) -- Rock singer Robert Palmer has died in Paris of a heart attack at the age of 54, his manager said.

The British star, whose chart hits in the 1980s included Addicted to Love, suffered the attack in the early hours of this morning, Mick Cater said.

Palmer, who lived in Switzerland, was staying in the French capital with his partner, Mary Ambrose, after recording a TV appearance in the UK.

"I can't say anything else at this point, I'm just in shock," Cater of What Management in England told CNN.

Weird. This wasn't expected, was it? (unless you take into account the musician lifestyle and shorter-than-average lifespan that they seem to have...) RIP

Dammit. I wake up to a Denver radio station that always happens to be at the news segment when my alarm goes off. In the last two weeks, I've woken up to:

"Warren Zevon has passed away this morning"
"Johnny Cash passed away last night"
    "Robert Palmer has died"

Hell of a way to start your morning.

    RIP Robert.

Wow, that's really surprising -- 54 just seems so young these days, I never expect people that age to die. May he be at peace. :(

    Simply unrevivable!

Damn, that sucks...One of the icons of my favorite genre of music, 80's pop! RIP...

2003 has just been a terrible year for celebrities dying. I cannot remember it being so bad in any one year.

    RIP Robert Palmer.

I listened to "Riptide" the album over and over again in the mid 80's. Robert Palmer made being awkward a cool thing, I could relate and will always remember him for that.

    May God bless your soul...

he was a big time smoker... i'm sure that contributed to his death. in his last interview (link here) he was shown with a cigarette in the studio...

R.I.P. RP, the best dressed man in Rock n' Roll....

Rocketman Tex, thanks for showing the kids what RP was all about ...

Nearly two years ago (10-21-01) my family and I threw a 50th-birthday party for my father, a big surprise, and my two presents (besides helping organize the party) included a disc of "Sneakin' Sally ..." and a vintage LP of the Allman Brothers that resembled their first two albums.

Huge Robert fan. I play my axe along with "Sneakin' Sally ..." more than any white boy jam phonograph. Loves me some RP. Little Feat behind him, with a funk dash of Meters, behind the instruction of Allan Touissaint.

    Gunna miss that cat.

From the 70s stuff, to Riptide, to Double Pleasure, to the two huge hit albums, to Power Station ... an underappreciated soul.

    Keep layin' it down ...

    Another Palmer fan here.
    Such a sad day.
Like Another Brother, Rip Tide was a huge favorite of mine.
Really loved his standard stuff too, like Ridin' High.
    Sad day.
