I'm glad they're showing even more respect to her character in SNW. Her character and role were pretty groundbreaking for the time. She originally was going to quit the show and join Broadway after the first season or so, but of all people, MLK convinced her to stay.

    R.I.P. Ms. Nichols.

Sad. We’ll never forget her sitting at the communications console doing her thing. RIP

RIP very sad another legend passed away. One of the great stories of her life was that she wanted to quit Star Trek and Gene Roddenberry told her to think it over. She talked to MLK who convinced her to stay.

No disrespect to her, or my grandmother, but cocaine should be legal once you hit 75, just to speed the ****ing stories up.

Rest in Peace, another pioneer. She and Bill Russell damn, she had a full life as well and fully used her gifts.

She also helped recruit black astronauts and used her fame for social change.

I remember the "commotion" at a Black woman being on a prime time television series in a significant role in 1966. It got a lot of coverage in the media, which I found fascinating, being a hippie bemused by the reaction. She was quite a woman and clearly had a great sense of humor, as evidenced in this interview with her that aired on NPR on Martin Luther King Day in January of 2011. Turns out that I had something in common with Dr. King. May Ms. Nichols rest in peace.

    That's such an awesome story!
I was going to post it myself but you beat me to it.
So glad she was able to meet "her greatest fan"! ("What you talkin' 'bout Dr. King")! lol

Didn't she announce she had dementia several years ago? I'm surprised she made it as long as she did. I wonder how she was in her final years? It does progress at different rates in different people, though. To live to 89 is amazing. I think William Shatner is older...isn't he? I'm amazed at how well he's aged.

Yup. She also had a stroke a few years ago. There was a big fight about conservatorship/legal guardianship among her former manager, her daughter and, I think, a friend, too.
