link I remember watching him back in the early 80's. RIP NEW YORK -- The balding, bespectacled nebbish who gained cult status as the oddball Larry "Bud" Melman on David Letterman's late night television shows has died after a long illness. The Brooklyn-born Calvert DeForest, who was 85, died Monday at a hospital on Long Island, the Letterman show announced Wednesday. He made dozens of appearances on Letterman's shows from 1982 through 2002, handling a variety of twisted duties: dueting with Sonny Bono on "I Got You, Babe," doing a Mary Tyler Moore impression during a visit to Minneapolis, handing out hot towels to arrivals at the Port Authority Bus Terminal. "Everyone always wondered if Calvert was an actor playing a character, but in reality he was just himself — a genuine, modest and nice man," Letterman said in a statement. "To our staff and to our viewers, he was a beloved and valued part of our show, and we will miss him."
RIP The NBC version of the Letterman Show was great TV. All of his crazy characters like Chris Elliott, Larry "Bud" Melman, and that lady in the office building across the street he used to call and harrass every day.
RIP - He was great to watch. He was a funny man. I saw him at the airport once, and he seemed a little lost.
i still love Letterman. but you're right...when it was really "Late Night" it was absolutely brilliant.
Am I the only one who thought this was about "Bud" from the Cosby show? I was gonna say he was fairly young....

King of Rock - Run DMC (embedding disabled) "Bud": Hey, this is the Rock'N'Roll Museum. You guys don't belong here. Ha,ha,ha." RIP
Holy crap! Now, that is VINTAGE Larry Bud Melman. I love how he keeps pulling the mic away from his mouth before he's done talking. LOVE those old Letterman clips.
