I guess that counts as #2 with the passing of Leslie Nielsen as well. Who's next?

Not surprisingly he did not write or direct Empire Strikes back, which is why its the best movie of the bunch.

    RIP...

Empire is a fantastic movie. I don't think the other 2 hold up...

And what's all this talk about a new trilogy that came out a decade ago? Never heard of it! I don't think it exists.

ironic that I wore a Star Wars t-shirt today, then someone in a class broke the news to me this morning.

The only GOOD Star Wars movie he directed was the original one: Star Wars Ep. IV: A New hope. This movie received a Best Picture nomination.

Irvin Kershner did Empire and Richard Marquand did Return of the Jedi. Lucas did all of the others.

Empire probably my second favorite, behind Return.

But let's be real...George Lucas, the greatest dialogue writer ever.

I don't know if Irvin Kershner wanted to be remembered as the director of the best Star Wars film, The Empire Strikes Back (with Star Wars having an equal impact, but not as well directed, in my opinion), but that's how I'll remember the guy, along with millions of other science fiction fans. Rest in peace, Mr. Kershner. You've earned it.

I saw Star Wars the day it was released and the first showing, too. I'll never forget it. Pure nirvana for an avid SF fan like me, who started reading the stuff in the 1950's. Then Empire came out and I thought, "Better and better! Fantastic!" What a disappointment the rest of them have been. Yes, I've watched them all multiple times, except for that absurdity with Jar Jar Binks (once was too much), but Kershner reigns supreme as the finest director of the Star Wars pantheon.
