My Krups coffeemaker, which lasted 6+ years (it was a wedding gift), just caught some sort of hemmoragic fever and died. Or rather, it brews the coffee and then pours it out of every nook and cranny in the machine, leading to one very messy kitchen.

I have to figure that Krups, Mr. Coffee, etc have made some cool advancements in home coffee making technology, since they are now competing with Starbucks.

Anyone have any recommendations for a high-quality coffeemaker? I'd rather buy a pricier one that last years than one that is gonna last me a couple months but save me a buck or two. Oh, and style counts, too. I'd like it to look cool in my kitchen.

there's some with built in grinders now. that's kinda cool.
i kinda like the the carafe-less one by hamilton beach where you just put your mug on the lever and it pours directly into your mug from the resevoir like fountain drinks. thats about $50.

Not a bad year to need a new coffee machine.

P&G, Kraft Take Shots at Single-Serve Coffee

    By Brad Dorfman
CHICAGO (Reuters) - Two of the world's largest coffee companies are joining the quest to take business back from the Starbucks of the world by bringing single-serving cafe-style coffee makers into people's homes.

Procter & Gamble Co. and several of the largest manufacturers of home coffee makers have developed a single-serving coffee maker that will use P&G's Folgers and Millstone brands, the companies said on Tuesday. Their Home Cafe is due to go on sale in the United States in May.

The coffee maker was developed by P&G, Applica Inc. and Groupe SEB's Krups unit. Applica makes products under the Black & Decker name. P&G's Folgers is the largest U.S. coffee company.

Kraft Foods also plans to give details on Wednesday on its single serving coffee machine, which will use its Maxwell House and Gevalia coffee brands. The company has said it will be launched in Europe and then in other markets. A Kraft spokeswoman declined further comment.

The amount of coffee people drink at home has declined over the past several years. In 2003, the average American drank 112.4 cups of coffee at home, down from 125.4 in 1999, according to NPD Group, a market research and consulting firm. The percent of at-home meals and snacks that included coffee fell to 12.3 in 2003 from 20.8 percent in 1985, according to NPD.

The move into single-serving machines for home follows their success in offices. The machines use pressurized brewing to force hot water through ground coffee. Single servings allow a choice of coffee.

Sara Lee Corp., with its Douwe Egberts coffee brand, sells a home system in Europe made by Philips, and Salton Inc., maker of the George Foreman grill, sells a single-serving coffee maker that uses Melitta coffee.

Mike Griffith, president of P&G's global beverages business, said that unlike Sara Lee's system, P&G's is focused on U.S. tastes.

"If you look at Sara Lee's machine in Europe, it makes a combination between coffee and espresso more targeted at the European coffee taste," he said. P&G will first brew traditional roasted coffee and later introduce cappuccinos and lattes.

In addition to Applica and Krups, the Home Cafe will also be sold by Sunbeam Corp. under the Mr. Coffee name and by Hamilton Beach.

The companies will spend $50 million on advertising to introduce the Home Cafe, which will be sold first in May under the Black & Decker name.

P&G sells nearly 35 percent of the coffee bought in the United States and the four manufacturers involved with Home Cafe sell about 75 percent of U.S. home coffee makers.

P&G shares were up 90 cents at $102.95 on Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange and Kraft was up 89 cents at $33.83.

i'm a committed french press fanatic. it's absolutely the best coffee i've ever had, far more flavorfull than a drip machine. none of the essential coffee oils are removed, so the brew is very dense, almost like a cross between drip coffee and espresso. plus, they're only about $20. just boil water, add it to some Zabar's Dark Espresso, coarse ground, steep for 4 minutes, e voila! the best cup of coffee you'll ever have.

It's time to move on mateo.

    Espresso!

half espresso, half milk (vanilla milk is my preference) and you'll never go back to coffee.

no way... make your espresso, then add the milk afterwards. if you have to, re-heat the drink in the microwave or pre-heat the milk before you add it to the espresso. or drink it lukewarm like i do.

btw, Illy espresso is my preference.

I was kind of wondering the same thing. I have a really cheap Mr. Coffee machine and was wondering if there is something out there that makes better coffee.

One peice of advice that i do have is to get a burr style grinder as apposed to the blade style. It grinds the beans more consistantly and brings out more flavor in the coffee.

I dread the day that my Capresso Aroma Classic kicks the bucket. It makes the best coffee ever (for a drip coffee maker, at least). That said, you might look into the machines that pressure brew coffee. You get more of the coffee flavor/aroma without the Tannin. One really good one is the Krups Moka Brew. It does take a little longer to brew, but the coffee is certainly worth the wait.

My wife and I bought a Cuisinart Grind and Brew. It is stainless steel, has a thermos type carafe (which means it wont break), and grind fresh beans everytime. It has also has a timer and a function for 1-4 cups. WE LOVE IT!!! It makes great coffee and you can use the 20% coupons at Bed, Bath, & Beyond on it. You cannot use that coupon on Krups and other brands for some reason. It cost $150 - 205 = $120. It is well worth every penny. My mom came up here to Indy over X-mas and went home and bought one. They love theirs as much as we do. It also looks good in the kitchen.

Not too big on those grind-and-brew w/ stainless thermal carafes. Unless you pre-heat the carafe like the instructions always tell you to, you're pouring hot coffee into a really cold carafe... only to get warm coffee. IMO, having to pre-heat the carafe just so you can have hot coffee kind of defeats the whole purpose of having a programmable-timer coffee maker.
