Alpert was the Defensive Coordinator for Huntsville during my HS years and a damn slave driver during off-season workouts. A good guy, a good coach.

His wife was also my 10th grade English teacher and my thoughts are with her and the rest of the family. I don't think I've ever seen anyone happier than Coach Bob when his son was born... it made quite an impression on my young mind.

    Sad to see him go.

03:43 PM CST on Friday, January 9, 2004

By TRACY SCHULTZ / The Dallas Morning News

Duncanville athletic director Bob Alpert, who as football coach led the school to its first state title in 1998, died at his home Thursday after a long battle with leukemia. He was 59.

"He's had a big influence on the success we've had the past eight years in every sport. His football record speaks for itself," assistant athletic director Kevin Ozee said. "He impacted a lot of lives, students and coaches. He impacted the whole community of Duncanville."

Alpert arrived in Duncanville in 1996, taking on the roles of head football coach and athletic director. He brought immediate success to the program, which had gone 17-32-3 in the five years before him.

The Panthers beat Converse Judson, 24-21, in a come-from-behind victory at the Astrodome for the 1998 state title. He was SportsDay’s coach of the year in 1998.

Alpert retired from coaching in 2001, ending a 34-year career.

Before arriving at Duncanville, Alpert spent 13 seasons at Aldine MacArthur. He led the program to 10 playoff appearances, including a trip to the state finals.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, 323 W. Wheatland Road in Duncanville. Visitation is is 2-5 p.m. Sunday at Jaynes Memorial Chapel, 811 S. Cockrell Hill, also in Duncanville.

Damn, it came at the expense of my high school in the state semis. They went on to beat Converse Judson that year.

I don't know this guy, but he seemed like a good coach.
