    I don't follow military stuff or really know about planes, but as a kid, for some reason, outside of the usual Boeing passenger liners, I fell in love with 2 planes ... the Bell X-1 and the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird. The first guy to officially break the sound barrier -- this dude is the stuff of legend. R.I.P.

    His altitude tests in the Starfighter with a rocket booster were always fascinating to me -- they'd reach [edit: 100,000+ feet - the record was 120,800 ft].

    Yeager is almost a mythical American legend.
