I am currently in the market for a new mower and I have a question about transmission types. As I have been browsing, I see the usual manual/automatic but I also saw hydrostatic. I've done some minor research on these and it appears this is an automatic that works through a pedal or stick and works via hydraulics. I noticed that maintenance is a little more intensive on these though but that really doesn't bother me.

Does anybody here have any experience with hydrostatic mowers? If so, any pros and cons to it? Any other information I should be aware of?

Do you plan on using it to mow or to race?

I have owned a Kubota zero turn mower for the last five years. I've never had a problem with the HST.

The way it works is pretty simple. There are two levers that control the steering. Push both forward to go forward and pull both back to reverse. If you want to turn move one lever forward. The levers control the rear wheels. Moving the right lever forward will speed up the right rear wheel, making the mower turn left. Moving the left lever forward will speed up the left rear wheel, making the mower turn right. It's very easy to drive and it took me no time to learn.

If you do buy an HST mower I would recommend you buy locally, so just in case something goes wrong they can fix it.
