You look over the FA list and it's just highly disappointing. The Rockets don't have the capital to get any significant additions. Then you look at unrestricted free agents (http://www.sportscity.com/NBA/NBA-Free-Agents-2008/) you'd consider spending the MLE on...and nobody pops out.

Pietrus, Barnes, maybe Michael Finley (though he strikes me as the type of guy who'd basically stay with the Spurs for whatever they offer him)

and then there's Ricky Davis. You read his name and immediately think, that guy's crazy. He's never been on a winning team, has a "chucker" reputation....and, again, kind of crazy.

But you look at the stats, and he definitely has some value. He's shot at 40% from 3 the last few years, taking over 300 three point attempts both years. He gets his fair share of rebounds and assists, a steal a game, etc. And he's actually a good free throw shooter

    http://www.nba.com/playerfile/ricky_davis/career_stats.html

I'm not saying I'd make him target number 1. It'd be great if every player out there with an option exercised, and you were left with some really good players forced to settle for an MLE type deal (like Corey Maggette...but unlikely). And I'm not advocating offering the full MLE to Ricky. But if nothing better comes through, giving Ricky a decent chunk of the MLE to be offense off the bench might not be a bad idea. When he gets hot, he really gets hot (see April 4th game against Washington...or other game logs), which means he isn't the most consistent, but as a bench player, you throw him out there and he could be a real plus sometimes.

    Anyways, just a thought...

If we could snag Ricky Davis, I certainly wouldn't be upset. He can play SG or SF and is not a defensive liability. With Davis at SG, I'd move T-Mc back to SF and let Shane (if he's not traded for a PG upgrade) to Sixth Man like he was at Memphis.

Ricky Davis was never good enough to be the difference between winning and losing, so the lottery teams he was on were just coincidence, I wouldn't mind him on the Rockets.

I like Davis. I think he brings some things to the rox they don't have. He's 6'7 atheletic, can create a shot, shoot a little and pass a little too. If the team decides to keep battier, he's ideal on the rox. He can play 2/3, like I said in the other off season thread, he shoots 40% 3pt and 77ft line. A lot of posters on this board don't like a edgy guy like that. believe me they'll talk this chemistry or system thing into the ground. They would rather have a luther head until playoff time then they realize in the playoffs u have to have creators and not standstill guys. They might be able to get him for 3m of the mle.

You know, I've been on the Ricky Davis Bandwagon for a while. I'm so distracted by the offseason that I looked over at the Miami boards and I found...

He apparently wants midlevel 6M - just hope he considers taking less than that and comes to us. Then we could focus on PG/backup C

Ricky Davis is more than a decent back up to tracy, would be perfect....only if we had Mark Cuban as our owner would we be able to afford him, back to Yao, a PG, and artest. That is a dream team though :(

if this were a poll, im pretty certain the haters would vastly outnumber the people who would be more open minded about Davis.

I think he's worth a look on the cheap - he's a proven scorer and that's what we need.

He could be effective mixing it up as a starter, with perhaps Battier moving to 6th man, or providing a spark off the bench.

he has matured in the last couple of years, and I think he would slot in as such with our classy organisation.

Ricky Davis intentionally goes for a triple double by making a move to his own basket!!

A legit 3rd scoring option that brings athleticism, size, a bit of an attitude/cockiness (in a positive way for the most part) and most importantly the ability to create his own shot? Hell ya bring him on board.

I may not like Davis on a bad team with a losing mentality and a bunch of "me" players, but I do like the idea of Davis around this group of guys.

If nothing else, he's got size and athleticism to play/defend both the SG and SF positions, he's a good free throw shooter, and he's only missed 11 games in the last 7 years.

I'm definitely hesitant to give him the whole MLE, but if the market turns out to be as bare as I think it might be and he's one of the only options left out there...

ricky davis is a serious answer to our lack of athleticism and scoring at the sg and sf position given our financial situation. he could end up being a bargain for whatever team signs him.

Ricky Davis doesn't play any defense and takes a lot of ill-advised, lazy jump shots.

If it pisses you off when TMac shoots those long jumpers, just wait until you see Ricky Davis do it 10 times each night.

It's hard to be motivated and play defense and very easy to chuck up garbage shots when you've played on a losing team your whole career under very little guidance and discipline. A change of scenery to a winning team where his contributions are needed would do him wonders.

It's not so much that he's crazy but that he's a knucklehead.

    No thanks.

Talented, but...(or is that 'butt') In Boston they used to say he'd check the stat sheet to ensure he had his numbers, and if he didn't, bombs away!

If I had a vote I'd say 'NO!'

"IF" Ricky Davis can keep his head in the game, he can be valuable on both ends of the court. He can be especially valuable to a team in need of slashing and shooting. Davis has apparently matured over the years (according to fans of the teams he's played for) and isn't quite the knucklehead he once was.

This is why I've had him on my watch list for the Rockets this offseason.

When you consider how flooded the free agent market is at the moment, you can't expect Davis to command the full MLE for his services. This of course depends on how many stars exercise their ETOs and whether the Heat want to retain him.

If he's willing to accept the sixth man role and play extended minutes off the bench...he can give the Rockets what they need. And of course...there's that other "IF".
