Pistons just announced late Friday night that Head Coach Rick Carlisle was fired. He wanted a new contract, which was denied. Apparently, Detroit wants LB. More news as follows... Thoughts? I think Carlisle would be a GREAT fit for the Rockets. The coaching search has just gotten more interesting... This might belong int ha NBA Forum, but it could involve the Rockets...
That sux for him. This team will probably be really good for a long time. You know you can get a lot of guys to score points for you. But players like Ben Wallace dont come around that often.
I don't understand it. I don't understand it at all. They could be left really up a creek if Brown blows them off.
Okay I knew Larry Brown was a great coach. But a 50 win team that alot consider to be still rebuilding. Its a shame that he dosent have the chance to work with Darko or Melo. They could have really made some noise in the East for years to come. They still might but its a shame its not Carilse he is the one that got this team back on track.
I'm with DonnyMost, WTF. When I heard it I couldn't believe it. There's something going on here besides basketball. Contract negotiations and you're fired? No no no. Something happened here, something was said, or done, or found out, and that was that. Something. But I don't believe for a second the Pistons really thought they could do better "basketball-wise." This is something personal here.
Detroit stands a snowballs chance in hell at getting Brown. He left an almost identical philly team for a reason, and it wasnt to go to another scrappy non NBA finals winning kind of team. Dumars better have something up his sleeve or he is in deep ****.
Apparently Carlisle may not want to coach anymore... Here's the story: http://espn.go.com/nba/news/2003/0530/1561275.html Carlisle fired after two seasons with Pistons ESPN.com news services Fifty victories. A spot in the Eastern Conference finals. It just was not enough to earn a third season in Detroit. Rick Carlisle has been fired as head coach of the Pistons after two seasons, he told ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher late Friday. Carlisle's Pistons went 50-32 this season, the best record in the East. Detroit advanced to the conference finals before getting swept by the Nets. Carlisle's impressive resume with the Pistons also includes an NBA Coach of the Year award for the 2001-2002 season, his first season in Detroit. Carlisle, 42, with one year remaining on his contract for $2 million, had been attempting to get a contract extension but was turned down. Finally, he was told that he was being let go. The Pistons have not scheduled a news conference, but Carlisle's agent said Carlisle intends to meet with the media on Saturday. Carlisle said he doesn't know if he wants to pursue another coaching position or return to television. The Pistons are reportedly interested in former 76ers coach Larry Brown.
This is out of control! Now what happens? Phil Jackson quits? Anything is possible. I liked Carlisle. He might have even been more impressive than Brown has been the past few seasons.
Les better figure out who he wants & hire him. With all the vacancies, the price to get the coach he wants might be going up. I wonder if Les is willing to pay $8-10 mill per year for a coach? Or, will he settle for a lower tier substitute?
The Piston's stupidity could be our gain. Carlisle is young, is a disciplinarian, preaches defenses, runs solid offensive schemes despite not having offensive weapons, and could grow with this team and be here for years to come. I would LOVE to have this guy coaching the Rockets! Get him on the phone NOW Les! Talk him into coaching. The Pistons are screwed anyway, even if Larry Brown comes he's not going to be there all that long. He's 20 years old then Carlisle. What a bunch of idiots!
I've read that Carlisle runs a stern ship and is very strict BUT THIS IS RIDICULOUS. He was the one that made ALL 12 of the players work as a team...this is just utterly ridiculous. I hope that they don't get LB and will burn later for this...
There were evidentally some deep seated personality conflicts between Carlise and the rest of the organisation. Lots of power struggles and some in the Joe Dumars camp accuse Carlise of being manipulative and disruptive. I would still hope the Rockets would have a good look at Carlise. His performance in Detroit was great and he is credited with a lot of the success of the Indiana Pacers run during Larry Bird's tenure.
This is ****ed up, but the final word is that the Rockets could practically throw a dart now and end up with a damn fine coach. Carlisle, Brown, Silas, Van Gundy, Collins, Fratello, Dunleavy ... I don't have any problem with any of those guys. But are Collins and Carlisle available? Both teams probably would want compensation, and nobody's gonna do that for Collins.
Man, this is the most BS thing ive seen happen in the NBA in a while. what did the guy do to deserve to be fired? there needs to be some kind of revolt against the pistons organization for that crap. thank goodness im not a pistons fan.
their stupidity will be someone else's gain. i've been praising Joe Dumars on his personnel decisions but this one is really STUPID. is it Carlisle's fault for taking a team with NO REAL SUPERSTAR into 1st place in the East only to be swept by a more experienced team with a SUPERSTAR? seems to me they want to throw their name in for the Larry Brown sweepstakes. I think this move was made because of Darko . I mean, who else could be a better teacher for Darko than Larry Brown? But again, this just have me dumbfounded.
