what a job this man has done this year. he gets his team to compete every single night. i love that he still is able to inspire this group to play extremely hard....i hope he is our coach for the next decade...he is that good.
Most well rounded coach since Rudy IMO. He's developed more young players for the Rockets than I can remember. I'm anxious to see how he'll handle Yao next year, but I'm confident he'll get the job done.
LOL. I was wondering whey your praise RA thread will pop up this year. He's a great coach, but I would like to see hiim assemble a better defensive lineup while not losing offense too much. Next year, defense needs a lot more attention than offense.
Pretty even to me. Both have strength and weakness. RA focuses more on offense, JVG more on defense. Ra has a better GM to get him better talents. JVG didn't develop young prospects nearly as well as RA, RA's team doesn't have the same discipline JVG had.
Except the Rockets had a better defensive rating with RA than JVG. This year we are missing a 7'5 center and playing rookies that might ahve something to do with their defense right now.
JVG actually had the best defensive rating 99 in 03-04, 100.7 in 06-07. RA had 101.6 in his first year, 104 last year and 107 this year. Of course losing a 7'6 center hurts, and I do agree RA can coach defense, but he needs the right players to make the team back to elite level. It's been proved this year, he needs a more defensive oriented lineup to do that while not losing too much offense.
I wonder also how he will handle Yao Ming, especially when he couldn't handle Tracy McGrady- I am no big fan of Tracy I just couldn't handle all the lies being told by Coach & manager.
He's done a good job, actually a great job, but can he win the title? He might just be a coach good enough to lose with. I dont think he will ever have teams as talented as those portland and kings teams and he couldn't win it.
Adelman's defensive ratings in Sacramento from 2000 to 2003: 99.6, 101.1, 99.1. who sported a top 5 offense and top 5 pace(for entertainment value). When was the last time JVG had a team that can crack mediocrity in offense?
My opinion is different on RA. I am kind of disappointed with his coaching. If I have to rate him today, he is a good but not great coach. He is lucky that he had a great GM in Morey to find all the good players for him, while JVG had to deal with the messages that Rudy T left with. That took several years to clean-up. RA also ridded on the strong defensive scheme that JVG developed for several seasons. I do think that the defense is going to be a problem for Rockets, as the way I see RA uses the players now. Look at the Rockets players now. BA, Anderson, Kmart, Scola are all bad defensively. In Scola, he is probably limited with his ability, but he is willing to work hard. The other players just do not have the desire, and coaches seem to be OK with it! You can blame all this to the injuries and such, but even with Yao back next year, I still do not see the how much they can improve. Remember that Yao is special! He is tall, but he is slow. He can be a defensive stopper to some teams but he can be a big defensive liability to other teams. My prediction on the team next year? Well they will be a good team, but they will not be great with the current make up, and coaching style. They will be somewhere in 5 to 8-th seed and will be out in the first or second round. Unless there will be some significant change on the player or COACH changes, this team is going no-where. Unfortunately I do not see that happening. To digress a little, I am tired of Drexler and Bill butt-kissing on Brooks. They always rave about how much he improved, and how much bright his future will be. In my opinion, Brooks is just like over-rated stock, Morey should try to sell it at the highest point before its value drops.
LOL they're pretty even coaches. Both of them reach the finals, and both of them are top notch. JVG is more consistent and you'll always beat teams you should beat, but RA gives you that "overachieving" factor, and his teams have that chance to beat stronger squads night in and night out. Personally I prefer JVG because he's more consistent, and I'd rather have someone overmanage the game rather than sit there and do nothing while the team gets punked, but it depends on your preference and overall they're the same. Give JVG Scola, Landry and Brooks instead of Juwon Howard and Rafer Alston and you'll probably get similar results. Anyway looks like the Nets will hire him next season, so you'll see for yourself how good a coachi he is.
When did JVG have a stacked team that can explode offensively like RA? If you want comparison, how about the Celtics during their championship run? Tom Thib was JVG's assistant before and they generally have the same system.
OOH heck no... R U serious, JVG never developed any young players, we were one of the oldest teams in the NBA, I don't recall ever JVG playing any young player or any rookie or developing any young group of guys, he didn't care about developing talents, all he cared about is defense, I think he is a good coach but not even close to Rick Adelmans level of coaching.
Teams are different. That 2000-2003 team had way more talent than Rockets ever had since Yao joined the team. It's not really that comparable. JVG only had enough good offensive players for half a season before playoffs. He is unlucky that he got hit by Yao/Tmac's injuries year after year after Yao developed into a dominant low post player. Besides Yao and Tmac JVG basicly got nothing on offense. RA got way more offensive weapons. RA had a taste of injury too this year and you see what happened.
