Wow.. he said a lot more than I'd expect.. or want him to if I was Morey. His quotes are the bottom, pre-game quotes about McGrady. http://www.nba.com/rockets/news/rockets_use_fantastic_finishin_2009_12_30.html
Very good interview with Adelman. He was honest and did not hold back. You can clearly see that he was afraid of McGrady disrupting the team again this year because of his selfishness. Looks like Adelman learned his lesson from last year.
Everything Rick said is reasonable. You can totally understand where he is coming from with the responsibilities he has to the team. I was really impressed by his candor.
Like someone mentioned, the team record is Adelman's leverage. The organization basically gets to point to the scoreboard on McGrady. If they were 12-19 there'd be a little more McGrady like 2006
Sounds very complementary of McGrady in some aspects, and echoed what most of the people on this board have noticed from McGrady's short stints of playing time.
I don't think he said anything inappropriate or particularly caustic about Tmac...I think what this shows, if anything, is that Adelman is a professional and classy coach.
Great interview. He opens up a lot there. This caught my attention in particular: He tried to brush it off at the time like it wasn't a big deal. But, clearly, he was not happy about it.
Overall nice candid interview by Adelman. I was really hoping to get a real explanation on why he kept such a short lease on Tracy though. I understand the whole thing about disrupting team chemistry by taking minutes from players on the existing rotation, but when Budinger went down, Tracy could have seen more playing time. Instead we see Jermaine Taylor getting more minutes than Tracy. Still wondering what Adelman's reasoning is with that.
Thats exactly how I feel about Tmac. Its going to be interesting how this unfolds. Lets say he gets another 2 months under Tim Grover and is not traded I would love to see how he plays then. Tmac is only saying all this stuff because its a contract year and hes being selfish hes not ready, but we hold all the cards and he cant do nothing about it.
Great interview. Straightforward and honest answers to some lingering questions. On the other hand, I truly hope Adelman keeps to his word and doesn't talk about this for the rest of the season, especially if/when McGrady decides to respond. Time to put this drama to rest.
Um - perhaps this? honestly..... the point is that T-Mac was trying to do what was best for 'one individual' and not for the team - so to teach him to fit in, he was being limited to 7.5 minutes per game. The question was: does he care about being part of the team (result - increased playing time) OR does he care about being MeGrady (result - benched for running his mouth leading to him asking for a trade). In the end we don't NEED McGrady - has he ever delivered a significantly better winning % than we're currently experiencing? If he won't fit in, then why ruin the whole team to placate a guy who probably won't be around next season?
Iunno why, i just have this feeling that Tmac will ended not being traded cuz right now we aren't getting nothing in return. I think he might come to his senses and come crawling back at some point this season. I dont think Rick and Morey have said or done anything that have definitivly ended this tenure with Mac..
He sounds honest. He is the guy I like in the process. Maybe a little of tweaking and we could sell Mcgrady higher..
Bottom line: If McGrady were willing to adapt his game and become a different kind of player than he was before -- moving without the ball, for one HUGE example -- Adelman would no doubt respond with big minutes. Even with the decreased athleticism, he's still a gigantic upgrade over Ariza on the offensive end. Players with Tracy's talent don't come along very often. The problem? He won't do it. Won't even consider it. Although he's now aging Tracy McGrady, he still insists he's the young T-Mac.
Great interview. Anyone that thinks that Adelman has/had an agenda by not playing McGrady more should read this article and wake up.
Good read. TMac trying to "push the envelope" too many times. Key words were "... it wasn't going to be just increasing minutes ..." It's a shame that TMac still thinks he can just "turn it on and be an effective player". If he was willing to follow the process ... who knows - we could still have used him in a number of situations. I guess he just pushed too far and too soon. Sure, the focus has been on TMac's knee since - but don't forget, his back was a major issue as well (which I'm not certain is under control either).
Agree with everyone so far. How the heck could T-Mac with a straight face demand minutes, exactly the same way he did last year before he decided to "shut it down"? All he had to do was play the team game and accept his 7-8 minutes. But no.
