As year passes by, the Nba is starting to base on mostly media. If the media said Lebron the best player in the world, then he is the best player in the world. Well I remember last season when Rick Adelman led this team far into the playoffs, he dealt with the complication of Mcgrady, and Ron Artest. He did well against the Lakers when we lost Yao and all we had left was Ron and a group of hard-nose role players. The season before that, the Rockets got the 2nd best Nba record for the longest streak. Rick Adelman led us to that streak without Yao for half the time even though he had McGrady. But nobody notice much about the streak and most people said that we got lucky because we played against weaker teams. But let say if that was the Cavs that did exactly what we did, play exactly the same team we did and won 22 in a row, we would still be hearing it right now and coach Mike Brown would be rated as one of the best coaches ever. My point is the Rick Adelman is indeed a very good coach and one day he will be a hall of famer. But year after year, he get looked pass. I mean I want him to get some recognition. I mean Coach Mike Brown got voted for coach of the year last season... Coach Brown is horrible. He is probably one of the worst coaches I have ever seen but Lebron just made him look good. Lets say if he switch spot with Rick Adelman right now and he is now coaching a team full of good hard-working role players without a star. Do you still think he get the recognition? Do you still think he gets the respect? I think he would get fired by Les Alexander before December even come.
seems like this board almost overrates him. I'm not expecting miracles this season. You guys shouldn't either. Just dont get too high or too low in the roller coaster that is the nba season.
I think Rick Adelman is a very good coach. It sucks that every time he gets so close to the finals for the championship, he gets stop by Jordan or Kobe and Shaq.
Just say Phil Jackson is the one coach who has had his number, but he has also had his number coaching top tier players as well. Adelman has coached at best 2nd tier players. Now he has Yao who is a top tier player position wise and Tracy who is a 2nd or 3rd tier player. Give Adelman top tier players and he makes his way into a the hall of fame no doubt. Drexler was a 2nd tier player and Webber was a 2nd tier player. Yao is the best player he has ever coached probably atleast as position tier goes. As for the whole league in general then Yao is border line 2nd tier player.
I don't think anyone in the league underrates him. He's always in the coach of the year talks. Sure he might not have won the award but he's always grouped with the best coaches in the NBA
one of the best in the biz, but he's never been able to get past the zen master and the lake show. hopefully that'll change in the near future ('10-'11)...
Most awards are based on how far a team will get in the playoffs, like the MVP award goes to a player who's likely to advance deep in the playoffs....not that they don't deserve it, but if there's a couple guys worthy it will go to whoever has the best shot to win it all.... in the case of coach of the year, it's usually about the biggest turnaround/surprise team and/or the best team in the league......unfortunately Houston tends to be consistently good, but not excellent and we haven't had room for a big turnaround since Rick has been here....if the rockets can get a playoff spot convincingly though, i don't see how he could not win it, unless some top team gets 70 wins or something like that
i find it ironic that this statement would appear on clutchfans. i know it relates to the topic but it just seems funny to me
Your initial statement is what really bothers me. The idea that the media, people who usually have no more expertise about the games then many of us, have so much power in deciding who receives the awards. They constantly go on about their favorites and biases. I remember Hollinger on kobe when he scored 35 ppg saying that you can't drop great numbers on a mediocre team and hope to be an mvp candidate, then i believe it was last year or the year before for lebron said i knwo his team is not top 10 in the nba but his stats are just too good to ignore. They make excuses for their biases as well, as great and amazing as lebron is they often ignore his holes or pretend he has none, i remember in a sports illustrated poll they asked teh actual players the best player in the league is, I believe 60% or above majority said Kobe, but media had 75% towards lebron..whose right, the people watching, or the actual players? They often change the definitions of awards too. Steve Nash got MVP twice in a row and history books down for it, he had Amare averaging 25 ppg one year, and still ahd a stellar cast. He had an amazing coach who gave him the offense to allow to play so great. Yet he played no defense what so ever. John stockton(love him or hate him) did what Nash did as efficiently while leading the nba in steals for years, yet never came close to even being a candidate. It was the 25 ppg scorer(malone) who got consideration bc he could always complete his assists and what not. Yet i guess the media was on nash's jock, so decided amare only finished bc of nash? It is so inconsistent in so many ways it becomes frustrating. I really wish it was coach's, and players themselves who vote for the awards, that would be the most fair way and they can't vote for themselves or anyone on their team. We and the media shoudl get teh all star votes where year after year we mess it up with whose the most popular, but the awards that go down in history shouldn't be in tehse guys' hands. Sorry for the rant folks, it just strikes a cord to see the inconsistency in these awards
we've been fortunate to have had some great coaches. just to go back, JVG was also a great coach. wished things would end up better for him with us. but now rick is doing a great job with this team. i expect a great product on the floor this year. we've always played well regardless of who's hurt or not under rick. i don't expect anything to change.
We will see what Rick can do this year with our team. He has to be a rookie of the year candidate if we play like I think we're capable. Such optimism the night before the regular season!
I don't anybody underrates Rick Adelman. Most people have him pegged as a tier below Popovich and PJ, which is where he should be (along with Pat Riley and Sloan). Its not like RA doesn't have his faults-he played Yao Ming a ton of minutes a game (wonder if that contributed to his broken foot?), and didn't use the bench enough. It doesn't matter whether its the coaches or the media who decides the awards because not all the coaches are elite anyway. There's only a handful of knowledgeable coaches in the league-I'd rather have someone like Hollinger voting for the player awards than a coach like say Del Negro. Giving it to the media generates a lot of buzz and gives people fodder for NBA discussions, which is exactly what the league wants so I doubt they'll change it anytime soon. All these awards are superflous anyway, and even if you're a fan its hard to relate with individual awards. I mean, do people really celebrate when Tim Duncan earns all NBA honors? We really only care about 1 award, and its not decided by votes
Underrated? I thought that we just rate Rick Adelman just where he should be. People give him lots of credits he should have. Why do we complain. By the way, from the day1 he was here, I predicted that he would do better job than JVG, if you think JVG is a great coach, then we have to rate Rick much high.
I think coach RA is one of the best now. he will not get fired this year. He might get extension this year. But based on his records, I don't think he is championship coach. probably he'll never win a WC. I think JVG is better than him, especially for Current Rockets team. Coach JVG will bring better chance to win WC.
