Although you can whine about a few of his 4th Q decisions, I'm satisfied with his job this year especially. With multiple injuries and a morphing roster, he has utilized his bench and team exceptionally. Particularly, I like his unique match ups and draw ups after a time out. He is almost always effective at out coaching his opponent at various points in the game. BTW: in the past 15 years, he has failed to make the playoffs only twice. Discuss why you appreciate Rick Adelman and his system.
For the Rockets to be in the #3 position (albeit by only a small margin) at this point in the season with what we've dealt with, I think you have to give Adelman props for creating an environment in which players can succeed. Many coaches in this league use intimidation and threats to get their point across; Adelman lets players work out their kinks on the court, demonstrates respect for players, and yet holds them accountable (Tracy?). With our roster of veterans, he is exactly the type of coach we need. Our 4th quarter meltdowns are all about our players and their inability to execute the game plan. Coach has done his job- players gotta keep steppin up as we move towards the playoffs.
i love his personnel adjustments during games. with Van Gundy you had a rotation set in stone. T-Mac and Yao would ALWAYS leave the game at the end of the first and play only half of the second quarter. With Adelman he plays guys depending how the game flows.
Not a big deal, I think we need to consolidate Appreciation threads anyways We should have one per person per season. Like Shane Battier 2009 vs Shane Battier 2008 or just one big Shane Battier Appreciation Thread
laneh, if you can change the Appreciation Thread title to : Rick Adelman Appreciation Thread 2009, then this thread should be fine and make it different from the one in 2008 etc
Without the trouble makers on his team, Rick is just great coach who knows how to coach, his resume just speaks himself.
I really like the way he has handled adversity and helped the younger players develop by letting them learn by experience. We all know that no simulation or lecture is equal to actually living and doing what is being taught to you. I also enjoy the fact that this team is only with one star and is still among the top in the Western Conference. No disrespect to JVG but I don't think we would be all the wat at 3,4, or 5 if he was left with this team.
While Adelman cant show his offensive genius with this Rockets roster, he shows the other side of his brilliance as a defense mogul. Holding LBJ & the Cavs to 11 & 10 points in 2 qtrs was no joke. JVG who?
I have criticized him a few times before not because he is not a great coach, but he can not handle Rafer and TMac, but it turned out that the best way to handle them is to trade them or leave them on the bench.
Do you mean while Adleman can show his offensive genius with this roster? If he can not, who can do better on this roster, do not know.
I haven't really had a problem with Adelman. I enjoy watching the practice footage they sometimes show in the pregame show, the guy obviously has respect from the team. It was almost the complete opposite watching the grizzlies yesterday. It appeared like they were just running whatever on offense, most of the time anyway.
No, I said "can't". I can't recognise these Rockets at the offensive end as an Adelman's team on the floor. But Adelman has brought some improvements about getting easy baskets and how to re-post Yao. But Yao is damn slow this season and I think he's still trying to recover from his foot surgery. So, the result is not so obviuos.
i still think JVG would do better with this team than adelman. i just don't feel confident in the defense, which was shut-down under JVG. we only needed more offensive talent (here or there). hopefully we can up that defense up to the championship-caliber and maintain this offense.
Our defense has been pretty much up there with the best since the all star break, not to mention JVG slowed the game down. Points scored is very misleading, under JVG we were not good at making defensive stops when we needed to.
I wish he'd play Deke some spot minutes just to keep Deke in shape. Deke can change a game all by himself with shotblocking, defense, getting extra possessions. He deserves 5 minutes every other game or so, if not every game. That said, Rick is the right coach right now for this team. It takes some guts and confidence in players (Brooks, reputedly Adelman's draft pick) to just ship your starting PG away and start anew half-way through the season.
