Oh well, they still won't win it next year! http://www.ptconnect.com/archive/sports/0701/18/spo07.asp League sources say the Lakers have received an oral commitment from the 36-year-old Richmond, a six-time All-Star. The deal is believed to be for one year, at the veteran's minimum of $1 million. Richmond must still pass a physical exam, and no announcement is expected for several days. Laker officials, burned last summer when Kendall Gill reneged after making an oral agreement, are mum on the issue. Richmond averaged a career-low 16.2 points in just 37 games for the Washington Wizards last season. But he is a career 39 percent shooter from 3-point range, and should solidify the Lakers' thin backcourt. ------------------ Draftsource.net-- the premier source for draft info. Man that is a great pickup for the Lakers! If they can get a quality starting PF they are going to be dominant again! ------------------ "Instruments are like women: After a while, you want to make love to another." - Nicolas Godin of the musical duo Air [This message has been edited by RocksMillenium (edited July 18, 2001).]
Richmond is a two guard, right? Kobe is a two guard, right? JR Rider (I'm not sure if he is still on the team) is a two guard, right? They should trade one of them (not kobe) for a pf. They have Lindsey Hunter now at point guard, so now they have covered every position legitametly except pf. ------------------ Life quotes: -Statistics are like a bikini; what they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital. -You can get much farther with a kind word and a gun than you can with a kind word alone. -Anyone who can walk to the welfare office can walk to work. -Budget: A method for going broke methodically. -We've sent a man to the moon, and thats 29000 miles away. Walker won't be a Laker. Cleveland offered him 8 million over 3 years. He won't turn that down to play for 1.3 million in LA. ------------------ Draftsource.net-- the premier source for draft info. Profiles, rankings, mock drafts, and more! The Mo Taylor Fan Site
Rider isn't a Laker anymore. Besides the Lakers DO need a backup 2-guard, unless Kobe is going to play 48 minutes a night, for 82 games and the playoffs. Richmond allows Kobe to rest, can fill in at the SF spot, and give them instant, experienced offense off the bench. ------------------ "Instruments are like women: After a while, you want to make love to another." - Nicolas Godin of the musical duo Air
Richmond may be 1/10th the player he was 10 years ago, but he is still a steal at the veteran minimum for that team. They still have Horry, they still have Fox (maybe in some matchups he could play the 4), they can play Kobe some at the 3, it just gives them more options. The Lakers still have their mid-level to throw at the best true 4 or 4/5 out there, it is not like Grant was that good last year. The just need a bulky guy to back up Horry, providing a few fouls on the Wests dominant PFs, and they will be fine.
The Lakers won't use their 4.5 million this year, because that will put them over the luxury tax. Unless they can find someone like Samaki Walker to play for 1 million, they'll go into the season with the PF rotation of Horry and Medevenko. How fearsome. ------------------ Draftsource.net-- the premier source for draft info. Profiles, rankings, mock drafts, and more! The Mo Taylor Fan Site
I think you may see Kobe playing more at the point as well, with Mitch getting some minutes at the SG. It will keep Kobe happier by letting him "run" the offense.
I agree, Walker won't turn that down. He learned his lesson when he was with the MAVS. When he first became a free agent the MAVS offered him $20 mil for 4 years (He would be in the third year this comming year). He turned it down because he wanted more. Nellie pulled the offer,a nd he ended up in San Antonio for something like 4 mil for 3 years. What a dumbass. ------------------ http://www.rapmusic.com/texasg/NewMavsLogo1.jpg
The Cat: i really hope you're right. i don't want to see the lakers solidify another ring! ------------------ shandn has no "o".
Fearsome enough to still be the best team in the league. Every team has holes, and none of the really good teams sans Sac (if they resign Webber) has improved. And Cat, you forgot about Mad Dog too. Who knows, maybe they will get Larry Smith out of coaching to provide fouls and rebounds.
That is still a HUGE, gaping hole for the Lakers, and it will be made even bigger with the zone defenses. After seeing what the Lakers have lost I've changed my stance a little bit, I don't think the Lakers are far and away the best team, and if the Spurs get their act together mentally they could be the best team. Some of these "new kid" teams like the Rockets and Nuggets and Clippers can scare the Lakers. I'm not sure the Lakers are going to be fearsome or dominant next year without a proven PF. ------------------ "Instruments are like women: After a while, you want to make love to another." - Nicolas Godin of the musical duo Air
Not so fast Fakers... this info from LA: On Channel 4 they said that while he has given his commitment, he is also weighing an offer from San Antonio. They are offering more money obviously. http://www.lakersground.net/~board/viewtopic.php?topic=3256&forum=1&12 ------------------ Draftsource.net-- the premier source for draft info. Rider's contract was only for one year. I doubt he'll be re-signed. Nice nick, BTW. ------------------ All hail Fadeaway's Cyberfish -- your 2000-2001 BobFinn* Fantasy Basketball League Champions!
