Richard Seymour Traded To Raiders The Patriots trade DL Richard Seymour to Raiders for 2011 first-round draft pick. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4450767
Moe I am praying for you right now. This move makes no sense at all for the Raiders. Pats on the other hand, great move.
Whoa, where did that come from? That's a risky move from both ends. Risky for the Pats because he's still VERY good. Risky for the Raiders because that 2011 first-rounder could very well be a top five pick plus he's in the final year of his contract. Very interesting and unexpected. I like it because it seemingly weakens an AFC rival in the short term as well as strengthens Oakland's defense, which happens to be my fantasy backup!
I'll just repost what I said in the other thread. Again, at this point, with the way the Raiders draft in the first round, if they can somehow sign Seymour long term, its probably actually a good move. They've blown almost all their high-draft picks for the past 10 years, and this team looks horrendous against the run as they have for quite a while. Something had to be done, and they can at least franchise him.
Great move by the Patriots...They most likely werent going to sign him after the season with Vince Wilfork in the mix. Smooth.
Something tells me the opinion on this board would be a lot different had the Texans given up their 2011 First Rounder for Seymour.
Patriots needed to make a choice between Richard Seymour and Vince Wilfork. They wouldn't have been able to re-sign both of them without crippling their salary cap - something the Belichick era Patriots just don't do. Looks like they chose Wilfork and ended up getting great compensation for Seymour. Look for the Patriots to somehow turn that first rounder into like 50 2-7 round draft picks...it's like clockwork with Belichick. Pretty much, but the Patriots have been integrating a lot more 4-3 this offseason.
so do you think it is a good move or not. I just don't know how seymour going to fit in a 4-3 defense. I'm not usually okay with giving up high draft picks for a player who either a) will not be around for long or b) is getting old seymour is 29 but he's a nine year vet. lot of wear and tear for a lineman. 2011 sounds like a long time away but its only the draft after the draft after this season. you make deals like this when your window of opportunity is open. the raiders are a few years away from anything
Wasn't Seymour a DT at one time? Or at least I remembered that playing on Madden a few years ago. Well, the Texans aren't a lock to get a top 10 pick though.
The Raiders also traded Derrick Burgess to the Pats for a 3rd rounder and a 5th rounder before camp started. That'll really be even more egg in Al's face since Kiffin let Moss walk for a 4th round pick. Even though Belichick is often praised for his stockpiling of draft picks, the Patriots really haven't drafted expectionally well over the past few years. Seymour did play DT in the 4-3 for his first couple of years I believe.
Something tells me the Texans have a good chance to be competitive and this would fill the most glaring need on the team. The same something tells me the Raiders have little chance to be competitive. Plus, if the Pats and Raiders make a surprising trade like this, the Pats are probably robbing them blind.
I don't think anybody is a lock to suck in 2011. Not with all the parity in the NFL. These are the Raiders though, so you just assume they've once again ****ed themselves.
And why wouldn't the Raiders make up a move to shore up their D-line which is their glaring weakness? I understand that logic but here is mine. The Raiders would take some idiot who runs a 4.3 (Heyward-Bey) with that Top 10 pick in 2011, or a Safety who can't make a play to save his life (Michael Huff) or a QB who can hurl a ball 60 yards off his knees ala Kyle Boller, or a supposed "10 year bookend LT" who turns into a nothing more than an above average Guard (Gallery) Might as well take a chance on a proven commodity given your atrocious 1st round history.
Belichick just keeps throat *****ing Al Davis. First Randy Moss and now a #1 pick which there's a 95% chance of being in the top 5.
Can't argue with that kind of logic. After all, we're talking about the Raiders. But will Seymour even be on their team next season? If they sign him long-term (which is doubtful), he'll cost a lot more than a 1st rounder.
