Wow that might not be a good thing for the Spurs considering that $15 million expiring contract would have been a good bargaining chip.

    Jefferson opts out of contract

According to KSAT 12 News in San Antonio, San Antonio Spurs' forward, Richard Jefferson, has decided to opt out of his final contract year which would pay him $15.2 million dollars next season:

The report goes on to state:

According to a Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, forward Richard Jefferson has opted out of the last year of his contract.

This would free up much needed salary-cap space for the Spurs to go after another free-agent.

Jefferson had his lowest scoring season since his rookie season with the New Jersey Nets. He also did not mesh well with the team and did not live up to expectations.

Great move by Jefferson - look for New York to sign him to a max deal.

If a team signs him to the MLE, then he breaks out ahead...

Strongly doubt he'll get something better than that per year, but not a bad move, I'm sure with so much money being thrown around he can secure a long term deal at or above the MLE. Hes not old and can still make plays and kind of defend.

Heres hoping New York really screws up and signs him.

what does jefferson think he will get

at most a MLE type deal at 4-5 years that may net him an extra 10-12 million over the course of the contract

i am sure he could have gotten something similar to that next season even with the new CBA

Spurs need to re-build. Jefferson needs a new team. Makes sense for both parties.

$15 million is a lot of money but I could see somebody signing him up for say a 3-4 year contract worth anywhere from $25-35 million.

Maybe he was ashamed of his performance and wanted to give the Spurs a break.

i don't think he would have gotten the MLE after this season. Especially considering how crappy he fits in San Antonio. He would have been coming off two bad years...

Who's going to commit full MLE money to Richard Jefferson? The teams with caproom might be sad about not signing any of the TOP 3 FAs but they aren't crazy enough to waste space on Jefferson.

Jefferson's looking out for his longterm interests, of course, but I'm assuming he's hoping for a 4/$20 million or 5/$25 million will drop into his laps?

Perhaps the Clippers should offer him a three year deal for 21-24 million...

well i can't see him getting any "better" in SA, he just didnt fit and i dont expect his numbers to change next year...better to get out sooner, especially when someone like the knicks may overpay, or at least pay a solid amount for ane xtended amount of time. And maybe he doesnt like the city either? Sometimes a crapload of money doesnt matter when you can be happy elsewhere for "just" a lot of money.

He must have really hated Pop's doghouse or invested the rest of his money really, really well.

I'm absolutely stunned by this. 4 years/$20M is about all I see as his market value.

IIRC, even with his $15 mil off the books, the Spurs still have about $52 million in committed salary for next season. If that's correct, they won't have room to sign a free agent outright BUT can bring in a free agent via S&T without taking a luxury tax hit. So they aren't MAJOR players in the FA market, per se, but Jefferson did help them to an extent. And from what we've seen, the Spurs don't mind going over the cap..as long as they don't get hit w/ the luxury tax.

This move will do wonders for the Spurs' luxury tax situation but doesn't do much capwise since they'll only be about 4 million under the cap. Still the spurs front office got to be doing backflips over this turn of events.
