EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Forward Richard Jefferson has signed six-year, $78 million contact extension with the New Jersey Nets.

Jefferson, currently in Greece as a member of the U.S. Olympic team, agreed to the deal last week and the Nets announced on Friday that he had signed it. He would have become a restricted free agent after next season.

Jefferson averaged a team-high 18.5 points and 38.2 minutes a game last season. Jefferson also averaged 5.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.12 steals a game, and appeared in a career-high 82 games.

Jefferson's signing came just weeks a series of roster moves that left the team without forward Kenyon Martin and shooting guard Kerry Kittles.

New Jersey was forced to sign and then trade Martin to Denver rather than match a proposed seven-year, $90 million contract. The Nets would have had to pay Martin $23 million in salary and bonuses had they matched a planned Nuggets offer sheet.

Kittles was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers for a second-round draft choice.

New Jersey has signed forward Eric Williams and guard Ron Mercer in the past week.

$13 million a year for an average two guard. This is going to blow up in their faces. This is why they didn't want to resign Martin?? To give this guy what will be one of the worst contracts in the league. This guy is making more than twice what Mobley makes. Ridiculous.

Nets are still a trainwreck. They should just blow it all up and see if they can get Van Exel and Randolph for Kidd. Start over with youth with Randolph and RJ. Portland may agree to a deal like this since they have SAR, though I doubt it.

and CD's brilliant plan to submarine the nets, at the piddling cost of 3 draft picks and a gun fight, by allowing them to get jefferson just as kidd came aboard to make him appear better than he is and just in time that he would be up for extension as cheap new owners came in to rebuild the team, thus causing the nets to hugely overpay for RJ to save face, is now complete. kudos.

but seriously, $13M a year for jefferson? he's got a nice game, but not $13M/yr worth of it. but then again, this is the "GM's Gone Wild" edition of the nba offseason.

Anybody else notice that the title of the article is "Celtics keep Banks, send Jones to LA?"

Now I'm glad we traded him for Griffin.

Now we're not paying Griffin, Jefferson, Collins OR Scalabrine.

Seriously though 13M? He's worth 7M. ince Kidd goes, they will try to dump him because there aren't many PG's out there who can take advantage of such athleticism.

I guess RJ is about twice as good at what he does as shandon anderson. So? pay him twice as much as shandon anderson!

Call me when RJ develops a consistant jumpshot (both from midrange and 3pt area) and isn't just a finisher on a fast break or a slasher in their set offense. The guy is getting near max money yet is only half a complete player.

Let me be the first to say that I am glad that RJ never played for JVG and the Knicks.

    talkabout crazy contract.

i think management felt weird about losing KMart so they decided to make it up by locking in RJ.. good for him but damn Nets Management is going to be kicking themselves in a few years.

He could not even make the Greece national team based on his horrible play he displayed in the last month. Not even sure that he can be a janitor.

Another POS whose skills are bloated by the NBA rules and games.

I have maintained for 2 years now that Richard Jefferson is THE single most overrated player in the NBA, and this just confirms it. Disgusting.

He's the James Posey of the East. Actually, I don't think he's even as good as Posey. This is just sad. How does one get a job as an NBA GM? Jefferson can't even create a shot for himself much less his teammates, and they're giving him the max? Honestly, how can you be stupid enough to try and build a team around Richard Jefferson?

He's not great at it in my opinion, but according to all the NBAtv highlights that I've watched, he does have some impressive 1-on-1 moves. His D is very good, his jumper (Olympics withstanding) has improved, and of course he's a great finisher. He ain't worth the max, but he's not terrible. He's a system guy; not a superstar.

That pretty much sums up the problem with this contract. He is a system guy, and someone who plays well off others. He's a great guy to have on your team, he could fit on any team in the NBA in my opinion. But when you expect him to be a main cog, I think you will have problems. Just like in the Olympics. He is supposed to be their outside shooter and he's practically useless out there. It is too much of a defined role for him I believe. He needs to be able to roam around and let whatever comes to him come. But he can't be expected to initiate anything. I wonder what the Nets are thinking watching him right now.
