Just a heads up for anyone who is interested. Richard Dawkins will be giving a lecture at the Wortham Center on October 5th, where he will discuss topics from his newest book, "The Greatest Show On Earth". There are no cheap seats left, but you can still get some at $34 a piece. Still not bad considering that all attendees get a free copy of his book and have the opportunity to have it signed at the end of the night. http://www.progressiveforumhouston.org/ (it's the 3rd event listed) Yes, it's on the same night as the Rockets first preseason game, but that's what DVRs are for. <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/I-QWv_0Mjq0?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/I-QWv_0Mjq0?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>
Wait - did you just suggest that we DVR the first Rockets preseason game and, instead, pay $34 to go to a seminar on evolution?!?
I have seats in the upper left. I've watched quite a few lectures of his online and I can't wait for this one. Hadn't gotten around to buying his latest book, but I guess I don't need to now. something i'd gladly miss a rockets preseason game for
I may have gone to this had I known sooner and could have bought a cheaper ticket. All my atheist bros and hoes unite!
They DID have tickets for just $14, which included the book. I waited too long because I was trying to get a group together and had to get $24 for everybody. Same reason I didn't post the link here earlier...didn't want them getting scooped up before I had my group together
Richard Dawkins is such a charlatan. Seriously, he's not even a scientist, when's the last time he published anything serious? He's never done an experiment in his life, he just plays off false controversy to get money for speaking tours and books.
I won't be going, I already believe in evolution. It seems he'll just be preaching to the choir. The people that could possibly learn something from his lecture will probably be avoiding it like the plague. When I was in college, I was in a history class and we were discussing the Scopes Monkey Trial. One girl refused to participate in the discussion and said she would not study anything about the subject. She also said she would not answer any questions on a test pertaining to the subject. I think she got up and left the classroom if I remember correctly.
I think he is a good speaker and he is completely right on defending evolution. The world probably needs people like him to broader the understanding of evolution. Although I can see how some people can get totally offended by his attack on religion, I personally don't have a lot of problem with this. I think any religion should be open for debate about their belief. I happen to agree with a lot of his views. However, I think where he is wrong about is fiercely defending his belief in Atheism. The fact of the matter is it is probably impossible to prove whether some sort of being/God exists or not.
I just bought me a few of the last $34 tickets, and got me a much better deal on some earplugs off-a Amazon. 'Cause I ain't ever listening to no Richard Dawkins philosophizin'. And I ain't never read him, either. Giving away books to sell tickets? Only book I ever need is the Good Book. When all them other hoity-toities are drinking their cosmopolitans, I'm only gonna pretend to sip. I'm gonna sneak me some Holy Water in those fancy glasses instead, and when I get to the front of that holding line and he goes to sign me a copy of his latest heathen rag, when he's not lookin', I'm gonna get Mr. Dawkins but good. Yep, with a good ol' fashioned Surprise Baptism. "What you goin' to write about now, with all your fancy degrees and Jesus-denyin ways? You just got saved!" Then I'm gonna laugh, just laugh, all the way home. Jesus Warriers -- 1, Christ Deniers -- (As Always, Have) Nothing. Thanks, CCR; appreciate the heads up.
I would disagree with you, I think he is a brilliant writer and a fantastic speaker. I would love to hear him rape pound If you were bold enough to say that to his face...
He tries to prove that religion is a sham, he fully realizes that some sort of power could exist, just not the one Muslims, Chrisitians, or Spaghetti Monterans believe...
I don't know anything about Dawkins, but that's usually the case with "celebrity scientists." Their lives revolve around public outreach. Stephen Hawking hasn't done much real science in a long time. Neil deGrass Tyson only has a handful of scientific publications. Oh, and even if he's never done an experiment, that doesn't mean he isn't a real scientist. There are theorists.
