The Rice Owls just defeated the Oklahoma Sooners in the Super Regional at Rice's Reckling Park!!! Owls are heading to Omaha for the College World Series!!! WOOOOHOOOO!!
if college baseball wants to legitimize itself, why don't they remove the damn aluminum bats. maybe sports fans would take them more seriously and bring in more revenue for the school. maybe i'm just talking out of my ass. just seems to make more sense to me.
Yeah, you're talking out of your azz. Your comments may have been valid pre-2000, before college baseball reduced the allowable bat diameter, which greatly reduced HRs. To put this in perspective, Rice's team ERA was 3.13 this season. The best team ERA in the entire National League of MLB is the Mets at 3.81. The anti-aluminum bat crowd are ignorant about the situation - thanks in large part to that troll Jim Rome who hates college baseball.
but why not just use wooden bats? and why isn't baseball a big deal compared to college basketball/football? btw, i'm asking these questions in all seriousness.
One of the issues schools (colleges and high schools) continually bring up is the cost of the bats. While teams may go through dozens and dozens of wood bats over the course of a season, they may only lose a few aluminum bats.
Of special note to Rockets fans: Jeff Van Gundy was in the stands for several of the games over the past two weekends at Reckling Park. Apparently he's a big baseball fan. he was interviewed on TV and said Rice baseball was like the Duke of college basketball: great academics and great teams.
Because then you wouldn't get the trademark "ping" when they hit the ball. That's such a cool sound Baseball really isn't as popular on any level (high school, college, even pro) as football, especially at the lower levels. My guess is because baseball has more games and is slower paced than the other sports. And the postseason tourneys aren't quite as exciting because it follows a series format than a one and done. Or maybe baseball just doesn't get enough media love than the other sports. I'd imagine I'd watch a little more college ball if given the chance as Texas has some pretty dang good baseball programs. And I guess it makes it a little easier to stomach UH's loss to see Rice go to the WS. They probably wouldn't have gotten past them if they had reached the super regionals, though it would've been nice to see them get a little further.
Thats so awesome. I live in Omaha and always feel better when at least one Texas team is on the series
The world series field is set! Rice vs Georgia Oregon State vs Miami North Carolina vs Cal State Fullerton Clemson vs Georgia Tech
Pretty good field- I see Clemson and Rice getting to the Championship series (although the road will be tough) and Rice winning it all in a 3 game series. This coming from a senior at Texas... I respect Rice baseball.
