The cause of death has not been determined. Lloyd, 19, played in the Owls' season opener against Houston, and was a member of first-year coach Todd Graham's initial recruiting class. Lloyd was a two-time All-District 21-5A selection at Lamar and a three-year letterman. He also earned all-district honors as an outfielder for the Redskins baseball team and was elected to Who's Who Among American High School Students. School officials have scheduled a 1:30 p.m. news conference to release more information.
KHOU Rice football player dies after team workout 01:50 PM CDT on Monday, September 25, 2006 From 11 News Staff Reports RICE UNIVERSITY Dale Lloyd was a freshman who just turned 19 last month. A spokesman for Rice University confirmed his death but did not release any other details. The athletic director has scheduled a news conference at 1:30 p.m. KHOU.com will carry it live. Lloyd's family said the man died after a workout Sunday evening with the Rice team at school. They said he had just finished running eight 100-yard sprints when he told the coach he didn't feel good. University officials checked him out, and they called an ambulance and took him to Memorial Hermann Hospital. The family said doctors ran tests all night and couldn't figure out what exactly happened. He had a good heart rate, but his family said his organs started failing. He died around 8 a.m. Monday. Determining the exact cause of death will be up to the medical examiner. Lloyd was a 2006 graduate of Lamar High School where he was a two-time All-District selection. He helped lead Lamar to district titles in 2003 and 2005. Lloyd also played baseball for Lamar earning all-district honors as an outfielder his senior year. He was a good student who graduated with a 3.23 GPA. Lloyd was elected to Who's Who Among American High School Students and he volunteered with the Mayor's Youth Council. He was born in Houston and is survived by his parents and two brothers. When asked on his MySpace.com page if he gets along with his parents, Lloyd replied: "I love my folks." His first thoughts waking up? "Thank you God for waking me." Friends began leaving condolence thoughts on Lloyd's MySpace as word spread of his death: "dizzle! i can't believe this is 4 real... u were such an incredible talented person and u have blessed my life in so many ways." "The nicest, sweetest, kindest young man I have EVER encountered." "from me and the rest of our squad, we love u and miss u." His family said he'd been dating the same girl for three years.
