Rice has just defeated the University of Houston in basketball. This means that Rice is still the home of ALL THREE of the major sports trophies that are awarded between the two teams! Baseball: The Silver Glove Football: The Bayou Bucket Basketball: The Bayou Cup UH athletic director Dave Maggard said a few years ago that "UH should never lose to Rice in any sport." Good call, Dave. You lose to Rice in EVERY sport. *snicker*
Fantastic game. Zo Williams with the game winner with 2 seconds left. Tom Penders leaves the court crying.
texxx, I would say congrats. but you (and TJ once or twice) have made this *exact* same post at least twice in recent memory.. but the question still remains.. will you make a thread if Rice beats UH in chinese checkers?
At least a bit of good news... which Rice fans could use after this football season and the general direction in which that program is going. I agree, though, that there's no reason to go and rub it in.
I applaud Rice University athletics. It's always nice to see a team that graduates their players, beat teams that don't graduate their players. The other home of Jess Neely salutes you.
bigtexx isn't rubbing it in.. if he was he'd point out that they beat the other team out in the classroom too
That's an issue that has already been put to rest. However, unfortunately I have to wonder how much longer our football program can continue with the attendance we've been getting. The NCAA has a minimum attendance they require to remain Division I, and we're pretty close to missing that mark. So is UH, by the way.
bigtexxx, I don't know if you read the Owlzone forum, but one theory is that the Board, powers that be, etc., didn't really want the Division I-A football to continue, but didn't dare say so outright. While the school claims to support the program, they won't give it the funding or publicity needed. Then it can go downhill on its own and they can say it's not their fault. Because of the baseball success, I think we'll stay at that level of competition for most sports if at all possible... but the football program may be in trouble. Sad.
I don't see the big deal in Rice beating UH. The Rice/UH rivalary has always been fierce and intense no matter what the sport is. Playing each other always brings out the best in each team. You should see their lacross games. Talk about high sticking or whatever they call it.
He saves that for Texas(Though Rice superiority in education, already questionable, is diminishing rapidly), because he knows the Owls can't compete with the 'horns on the field/court/course/anywhere.
Then bigtexxx would either keep quiet about college sports (NOT LIKELY) or would still find some way to bring up Rice athletics because when Rice sports did exist......... You must be talking about men's lacrosse, because in womens lacrosse, a) there is no UH team, and b) UT pwns Rice. There is no high-sticking. It's called checking, and men's games always look that brutal.
UT's best undergraduate programs are populated by the reject bin from Rice applicants. Plan II and business honors. Plan II is almost exclusively that way.
