http://revolution.ign.com/articles/673/673578p1.html Also, Matt from IGN posted the following today: Yeah, I know, out of the 3 next-gen consoles, these specs are the ones that matter the least. Just thought I'd post about them anyway since this is the first real indication of what might be inside that small black box. FWIW, if these specs turn out to be accurate, I imagine Nintendo could even afford to go a little below their usual $200 price tag for the NA launch. In fact, maybe the $99 rumor will end up being more than just a rumor. Of course, I'm assuming that the controller tech isn't too costly and that the "secret" mentioned in the other thread won't be either. Could be an interesting move. Oh and let's see if we can stay away from discussing Nintendo's financial summaries for the last 6 years.
Well I've been a Nintendo fan (not fanboy) up until and into the last generation. I have never been a huge graphics w****, and I knew that Nintendo wasn't going to equip the Revolution with the horsepower of the 360 or PS3, but I must say I'm still disappointed. If this thing is only slightly more graphically impressive than the old XBox...I mean, come on.
I wasn't expecting it to compete, but I wasn't expecting them to just give up either. Wow, they weren't kidding about going after a different market, it's certainly not the next gen market. Anyways, if it's going to lag that far behind in the graphics dept, it better only cost $99. At least it will weigh less than a PSP....rimshot.... Though this all based on the dev kits, which as I understand it, are currently just altered GameCube kits.
Not if they're still turning a profit. I think they are going to have to spend money on advertising if they hope to achieve their goal of courting non gamers.
True. Although I'm guessing at least some of the developers have received info on the final design from Nintendo/IBM/ATI, so they may know more about the specs, even if all they have are early devkits. Plus, the RAM comments may be accurate since devkits (even early ones) typically have the same as the final version or even a little more. I'm curious to see exactly how much info IGN has on the CPU and GPU. FWIW, even with these low specs, they might be able to get some nice effects out of a ATI GPU with Shader Model 3.0. Still probably closer to current-gen than next-gen, IMO, but there might be some nice effects available on the system. Uh-oh...
Cool.. I'd buy it just to play all the old games, seems like that is really the direction they are going with the system specs not jumping out at you like Sony and M$.. I like the price (I HOPE) the best!!
Dude, you can be my CFO any day. Wake me up when XBOX turns a profit. Better grab a Snickers, though; it may be a while.
Did you know that Nintendo's net income for FY06 Q1 was $723.5 million? Did you know Nintendo's net cash flow for FY05 was $6.5 billion? I highly doubt they're going to throw in the towel anytime soon. Seriously, let me know when the uber l33t XBOX turns a profit.
On the other hand, why should we care if Xbox makes a profit or not. As long as they keep making it. Would be nice if Nintendo had superior graphics and a cool controller.
I'm gald the XBOX doesn't turn a profit. If it was profitable it would either not be as good or cost more to buy. I'd rather have the best console I could get for the least money I am forced to spend.
I don't think the discussion was whether or not we as gamers care, but whether or not Nintendo should just quit and go out of business...which is pretty silly. As impressive as some of these XBox 360 games are that have been coming out, gameplay is still the biggest attraction to me. The Gamecube game I played the most since I bought the system is Animal Crossing. We're talking about a game that probably could have been easily adapted to run on the N64, it was so low tech. But it was highly addictive. From what I have read, that is the direction Nintendo wants to go, and I applaud it. I also love the low price tag, because I still can't bring myself to spend upwards of $400 on a console, even if it is the best one out there.
Um...yeah. It doesn't quite work that way all the time. MS is losing money on the Xbox mostly because of some bad business decisions they made, not because the hardware truly costs much more than what they sell it for. If they did with the Xbox what they did with the 360, you would have had a better product at the same (or maybe even lower) price AND MS may have been able to make a profit off of it eventually. What MS is paying for the hardware != what the hardware actually costs. It would be like someone buying a 360 for $600 from a guy who got it for $650 off of eBay or something.
I don't disagree. I have a Gamecube and Xbox, and plan to get the 360 and Revolution. And the Gamecube has tons of neat fun games like Animal Crossing (though it wasn't my favorite, but I really liked Pikmin, for instance). Still, it would be cool if Nintendo could do that AND have the best graphics. But each has their own strengths.
