Perhaps this is the wrong forum, but I'm just dreamcasting...... Would someone care to refresh my memory on potential Rockets, i.e. we passed on Clyde in '83. Didn't we pass on MJ in '84, and then turn down a trade of Sampson for MJ? Who was offered for who, and who did we pick instead of the aforementioned players? In 83 the Rockets had the 1st and 3rd overall picks. They took Sampson and Rodney McCray. Clyde went 14th overall. In 84 the Rockets took Akeem 1st overall. Portland wanted a center and had the 2nd pick and selected Sam Bowie. Jordan went 3rd. Barkley went 5th. Supposedly, Portland offered the 2nd pick to Houston for Sampson.
Also, in 1985, Houston picked Steve Harris 19th overall, passing on a little known point guard named Terry Porter. Add him to the mix, and you have a lineup of: Center- Olajuwon PF-? (Jim Peterson) SF- Drexler SG- Jordan PG- Porter Of course, Houston already had a point guard in John Lucas, thus they passed on Porter. And McCray over Drexler was the right choice at the time. McCray was a much better overall player than Drexler. Drexler had no outside shot at all. He was nearly cut from Portland his first year. Portland not only offered the second pick, but they offered Clyde as well. So it was Clyde and 2nd pick for Ralph Sampson. If we had Olajuwon, Barkley, Jordan and Drexler all on the same team, do you think they'd be the players they did, in fact, eventually become? No way. These guys are as good as they are partly from their own talent and partly from the opportunity they were afforded to become great.
