AverMedia DVD EZMaker USB 2.0 You can use this device to transfer VHS tapes to DVD, VCD, MPEG or AVI. The system requirements are pretty strict, P4 system with a processor speed of 2.0GHZ or higher, 256 MB DDRAM and CD or DVD burner. I didn't do any research on these VHS to DVD devices, but I knew I wanted one and this one seemed straightforward, so being the impulsive consumer I am, I bought it. It was a returned item and was already marked down. I even got them to mark it down another 10%! I ended up paying about 60 bucks for it. I got home and read a few mixed reviews on this device but installed it with enthusiasm anyway. I then hooked it up to the VCR and instantly I could see what was playing on the VCR on my monitor and with the click of the mouse, I was recording it to my HD. Then you take that file and burn it to DVD or VCD or make .avi or .mpeg's out of it. I'm pretty satisfied with the DVD EZMaker, knowing that I can take these old VHS tapes and convert them to a digital format. The software is pretty basic and the device is no frills but I'm not complaining because it will do what I want it to. I'll be pretty busy for a while with this device, it records in real time and I got a lot of video tapes! This will be an ongoing project!
Just don't tell relatives about it... I got a Canopus ADVC100 a couple of years ago to record and edit Rockets videos and convert VHS to digital video format. I thought it would be for personal use. My relatives and a couple of friends have me working overtime converting crap for them.
That's pretty sweet. I would love to put some old home videos onto DVD so they last longer. I would also, eventually love to clear up some space by transferring those bulky tapes to DVD's. I might have to check into getting some of these things.
That is really cool. I've been thinking about getting something to do that with and to also be able to put my old hi-8 & 8mm tapes on my HD. I'm still figuring out the fun things I can do with my 2.8-GHz P4 I got recently. I suffered for years with a P2-350, so it's a huge upgrade for me. Another thing I'm looking forward to doing is putting a lot of tunes from my hundreds of vinyl albums on the HD, cleaning them up in the process, and then burning them to cd's. I love this kind of stuff. That's funny, DoD. I mentioned that I was planning on doing this in Houston and had some of the same reaction. In my case I told them I was still figuring it out. I wonder how long that excuse is good for?
