Can't believe that this hasn't been posted yet. I would have thought people would be dancing in the streets (excepting basso & T_J).

US Attorney General Gonzales leaves under pressure

    By David Morgan

WASHINGTON, Aug 27 (Reuters) - U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales resigned on Monday under pressure after months of controversy and political turmoil that President George W. Bush angrily blamed on his administration's critics in Congress.

Bush, who doggedly supported Gonzales during repeated confrontations with the Democratic-controlled Congress, said Gonzales had endured "months of unfair treatment that has created a harmful distraction at the Justice Department."

"It's sad that we live in a time when a talented and honorable person like Alberto Gonzales is impeded from doing important work because his good name was dragged through the mud for political reasons," Bush said in Texas.

Both Republicans and Democrats in Congress had demanded the 52-year-old Gonzales' resignation over the sacking of federal prosecutors last year, which critics said were politically motivated. He faced a possible perjury investigation for testimony before Congress, where lawmakers complained that his leadership had rendered the Justice Department dysfunctional.

Gonzales also weathered criticism on several other fronts, including his support for Bush's domestic spying program and his 2002 legal opinion that parts of the Geneva Convention on the treatment of prisoners of war were "obsolete."

He announced at the Justice Department that his resignation would take effect on Sept. 17. But the attorney general refused to take questions from reporters and gave no reason for his sudden decision to leave.

"I have lived the American dream," said Gonzales, a son of migrant workers who began working for Bush as an attorney when the president was still the governor of Texas.

"Even my worst days as attorney general have been better than my father's best days," he said.

Gonzales spoke to Bush by telephone Friday and then visited him Sunday at the president's Crawford ranch, where he formally submitted his letter of resignation.

U.S. Solicitor General Paul Clement will serve as acting attorney general.

    SPECULATION ON SUCCESSOR

Gonzales is the latest member of Bush's inner circle to leave the White House as the administration heads toward the final year of its two-term reign. Top Bush adviser Karl Rove departed last week, following former communications director Dan Bartlett earlier this year.

He served as White House lawyer in Bush's first term as president, before becoming the first Hispanic attorney general in February 2005.

"I have reluctantly accepted his resignation with great appreciation for the service that he has provided for our country," Bush said

A senior administration official said the president had not decided on a new nominee. But speculation quickly turned to possible candidates including Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff.

A new nominee could have a challenge winning support from Senate Democrats, including several presidential candidates.

"My hope is that the president will select a new attorney general who will respect the rule of law and abandon partisanship," said Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York, the leading Democratic presidential hopeful.

Other Democrats said Gonzales' departure would not preclude further congressional efforts to investigate accusations of political influence in the Justice Department, which has a tradition of political independence. Gonzales had acknowledged mistakes in the firings but insisted they were not politically motivated.

"I hope the attorney general's decision will be a step toward getting to the truth," said Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which will consider the next nominee's credentials.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada said: "This resignation is not the end of the story. Congress must get to the bottom of this mess and follow the facts where they lead, into the White House."

Like Bush, some Republicans sought to cast Gonzales as a victim of the partisan politics of Democrats who took control of Congress in January.

But Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, top Republican on Leahy's committee and a prominent critic of Gonzales, commended the attorney general "for placing the interest of the Department of Justice ahead of his own continued tenure."

"Now I look forward to the confirmation of a new attorney general so the Department of Justice can undertake its responsibilities," Specter said.

Too bad he and Ashcroft couldn't take all the damage they've done with them.

"It's All Coming Back To Me Now"

There were nights when the wind was so cold
That my body froze in bed
If I just listened to it
    Right outside the window

There were days when the sun was so cruel
That all the tears turned to dust
And I just knew my eyes were
    Drying up forever

I finished crying in the instant that you left
And I can't remember where or when or how
And I banished every memory you and I had ever made

But when you touch me like this
And you hold me like that
    I just have to admit
That it's all coming back to me
When I touch you like this
And I hold you like that
It's so hard to believe but
It's all coming back to me
(It's all coming back, it's all coming back to me now)

    There were moments of gold
And there were flashes of light
There were things I'd never do again
But then they'd always seemed right
There were nights of endless pleasure
It was more than any laws allow
    Baby Baby

If I kiss you like this
And if you whisper like that
    It was lost long ago
But it's all coming back to me
If you want me like this
And if you need me like that
    It was dead long ago
But it's all coming back to me
    It's so hard to resist
And it's all coming back to me
    I can barely recall
But it's all coming back to me now
    But it's all coming back

There were those empty threats and hollow lies
And whenever you tried to hurt me
I just hurt you even worse
    And so much deeper

There were hours that just went on for days
When alone at last we'd count up all the chances
That were lost to us forever

But you were history with the slamming of the door
And I made myself so strong again somehow
And I never wasted any of my time on you since then

But if I touch you like this
And if you kiss me like that
    It was so long ago
But it's all coming back to me
If you touch me like this
And if I kiss you like that
It was gone with the wind
But it's all coming back to me
(It's all coming back, it's all coming back to me now)

    There were moments of gold
And there were flashes of light
There were things we'd never do again
But then they'd always seemed right
There were nights of endless pleasure
It was more than all your laws allow
    Baby, Baby, Baby

When you touch me like this
And when you hold me like that
It was gone with the wind
But it's all coming back to me
When you see me like this
And when I see you like that
Then we see what we want to see
    All coming back to me
    The flesh and the fantasies
    All coming back to me
    I can barely recall
But it's all coming back to me now

If you forgive me all this
If I forgive you all that
    We forgive and forget
And it's all coming back to me
When you see me like this
And when I see you like that
We see just what we want to see
    All coming back to me
    The flesh and the fantasies
    All coming back to me
I can barely recall but it's all coming back to me now

Rove. Now Gonzalez. Who is next? Condoleeza and Cheney are the only ones left from the original motley crew. Condoleeza is keeping a relatively low profile so she can possibly have a role somehow in the future for the GOP.

I guess they hope Gonzalez's resignation will stop the investigations.

Most of the country is just waiting for the end of this disastrous administration.

    Gonzo On The Jetway

Some people employ the "Fredo" nickname, as coined by the president. They're The Godfather people. And as much as I, too, enjoy that movie, I prefer the less traveled "Gonzo" nickname, mainly because it reminds me of the great Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas. Months ago, I drew a comparison between Alberto Gonzales and Benicio Del Toro's portrayal of "Dr. Gonzo" (Oscar Acosta) in Terry Gilliam's adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's book -- I imagined the embattled Attorney General resigning in disgrace and impulsively flashing the Nixon "V for Victory" gesture just prior to boarding an airplane, just as Del Toro did in the film.

And now it's all come true.

Monday's events were so appropriate for a guy who did so much harm to the administration; to the Constitution; to our collective reputations abroad. It was an ugly, disgraceful and awkward resignation. Dirty and weird, like a bizarre anxiety dream the night before.

    Only this was real.

There was Gonzo on television, rushing through some hastily prepared remarks, all alone at the podium -- abandoned perhaps -- his s's more sibilant than ever and his voice quivering from something or another. If there's any consolation to this Gonzo affair, perhaps he was upset from the torturous (oh yeah!) levels of shame and embarrassment he might've been experiencing: two wholly undesirable emotions which Gonzo heartily deserves to experience for the rest of his days. For starters.

Or maybe he was restraining some uncomfortable laughter knowing he would soon be reading the sentence, "It is through [the Department's] continued work ... that the rights and civil liberties of our citizens are protected." That's an hilarious line for him to have included in this thing, since Gonzo has been partly responsible for torture, illegal wiretaps on American citizens, the Patriot Act, the Military Commissions Act and the death of habeas corpus to name a few items from his disgraceful legacy (in another time and place, naming just one of those items would be disgraceful enough).

Yet after so many years of service to George W. Bush -- going all the way back to their early days executing r****ded people together -- the president couldn't even be there with Gonzo during his darkest hour. After all, the president stood side-by-side with Karl Rove when he resigned -- hugging him and playfully doling out those loving pokes to Rove's midriff, each poke followed by Rove's signature, "Hee-HEE!"

No sunshine and hugging in the Rose Garden for Gonzo. In fact, the president couldn't even delay his trip back to Crawford. It seems chasing armadilla's and huffing Febreze was more important (I have no evidence that the president huffs Febreze in Crawford).

    Poor embattled Gonzo!

Sure, the president blew some long-distance kisses from that tarmac in Crawford. With Marine One thwapping its airfoils in the background making the scene feel even more matter-of-fact, the president remarked that Gonzo was treated unfairly. He said that Gonzo's name was dragged through the mud for political reasons -- "it's sad," the president said.

    Sad? Please.

The president ought to look at the waterboarding tub half full.

At least Gonzo wasn't, for political reasons, accused of having an illegitimate black baby. At least Gonzo's Purple Heart wasn't mocked, for political reasons, by delegates wearing purple Band-Aids (Gonzo didn't serve in combat, but whatever). At least Gonzo's children weren't threatened with death at the hands of terrorists for political reasons. No sir. Gonzo was simply caught lying to Congress over and over again, while appearing insanely foolish in the process. In the age of Rovian political tactics and fear mongering for votes, that's not so muddy. I mean, not once did anyone say, for political reasons, that a vote to confirm Gonzo meant a vote to confirm al-Qaeda.

Speaking of confirmation and fear mongering, it appears as if Secretary "Shirt Off" Chertoff (you can use that, Mr. President) will be up next for the gig. I wonder if members of the Senate are allowed to ask him about the federal response to Katrina or Shirt Off's awesomely prescient Terrorism Gut Of Excellence -- or is that way too much mud for a Bush nominee to handle?

With the tragically dangerous cavalcade of Bush nominees as precedent -- from Brownie to Dick Stickler to Gonzo to Miers -- it might not be a bad idea for Shirt Off and any other Bush appointments to be run through a more rigorous questioning process. Nothing that would cause death or organ failure, of course. The Senate can call them, I don't know, "enhanced interrogation techniques." After all, we don't torture! But the old confirmation process, in the context of the president's awful selections, is beginning to feel -- what's the word? -- quaint.

No matter who is selected to replace him, however, Gonzo will board that plane on September 17, 2007. Destination unknown.

Big "V for Victory" wave and he's off.

It's a sad day when a true Hispanic success story like Alberto Gonzales is ripped apart by the media and the angry, deranged liberal lynch mobs. His story is truly inspiring and the attacks against him are purely partisan, frivolous and deeply rooted in hypocrisy by the far left. Typical...

Nothing scares a liberal more than a successful minority within the Republican Party. They scramble like mad to tear them down...

It's like the White House just took a big dump and followed with a hearty, "Ahhhhhh!!! Out at last."

Dip **** couldn't even garner a hug from George. He'll just get the Happy Ending. You know, the multi-million dollar corporate gig from some of the Big Business Dudes and Dudettes, who made fortunes off of George and his pathetic gang. Heck, they'll figure it is the least they can do for one of George's pals.

    D&D. Impeach Bush and Cheney.
