I think something like this was posted a year or so ago. http://www.texasfreeway.com/houston/historic/photos/houston_historic_photos.shtml I found this site hella-cool. A few of my favorites: A photo looking NE of 610 and Westheimer circa 1964. That Shell station looks familiar. Notice the Joske's in place of where Dillard's is now. Behad and Rocketman Tex can tell you what Joske's is if you don't know : http://www.texasfreeway.com/houston/historic/photos/images/610_westheimer_12-3-1964.jpg Photo of the southwest 59 and Loop 610 interchange just south of the Galleria: http://www.texasfreeway.com/houston/historic/photos/images/59_i610_interchange_5_1961.jpg Photo of Highway 290 and Loop 610 interchange. You can see Delmar Stadium there. Notice how 290 just comes to a dead end. I don't think they even completed 290 till the early 80s: http://www.texasfreeway.com/houston/historic/photos/images/610_290_looking_nw_12-3-1964.jpg I-45 N in Conroe: http://www.texasfreeway.com/houston/historic/photos/images/i45_north_of_conroe_undated.jpg Eastex Freeway N at Loop 610 N. I love the cool roundabout looking exit ramps: http://www.texasfreeway.com/houston/historic/photos/images/us59_north_loop_undated.jpg
Photoshop in modern cars, and this wouldn't look all that different from what it is today... http://www.texasfreeway.com/houston/historic/photos/images/i45_safety_barrier_july_1956.jpg
This one cracks me up : http://www.texasfreeway.com/houston/historic/photos/images/us59_near_hazard_before_trench_1958.jpg
wow...those are amazing. i'm a 4th generation houstonian. my grandfather, with no high school education, owned part of a Sinclair gas station down near 59 and Shepherd...my mom lived right across 59..she talks about riding her bike across to see her father. she also remembers tells me of when the guy who invented the monorail brought it to houston first to sell it to space city...they set up a test mile of it near a mall for people to come try out. she rode it and loved it. city council nixed the idea. can you imagine how different this city would look today if in the late 50's early 60's they would have made an investment in monorail technology for transportation??? wow.
My parents and my friends' parents always used to tell us that when they first moved to Houston, 290 didn't exist and Hempstead Hwy was just a 2 lane road all the way to Austin.... Now I REALLY believe them! If you look hard enough, you can see where my parent's first house is... PS Max, love the sig!!!
codell-which picture has the one of Joske's? today, i'm actually wearing a blue blazer by Joske's. it used to belong to my mom's friend. she gave it to my mom before i was born and now i'm sitting at work with it on. i've had a few older co-workers see the label and talk to me about it, but can you or anyone else tell me more abt the brand and what happened to it? this is pretty neat!
Joske's: http://www.texasfreeway.com/houston/historic/photos/images/610_westheimer_12-3-1964.jpg History of Joske's: http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/view/JJ/dhjqn.html I guess Joske's didn't go out of business till the mid 80s??
Joske's was a local department store, bought by Dillard's. they had stores in the Town & Country area and the Galleria, that I know of. in fact, i think when T&C mall first opened up, it was still Joske's. before then, it was a stand-alone building in the T&C area.
My mom worked at Joskes until she was pregnant with me, so they must have lasted until 1982.... Every once in a while, when someone gets clothes for birthdays or christmas, you can find an old Joskes box in our house....
thanks guys! and i must say, after nearly 30 years, the quality on both Joske's blazers i have are excellent. on a side note, this is why i never shop at wal-mart. i don't want great stores like target to ever go out of business!!
ummmm... yeah. Well, sir, there's nothing on earth Like a genuine, Bona fide, Electrified, Six-car Monorail! What'd I say? Monorail! What's it called? Monorail! That's right! Monorail! Monorail... Monorail... Monorail...
is there any question of that?? when my son was born the other day my wife kept saying that she fully expected me to be out there riding the train back and forth through the Med Center with no apparent reason or destination at all.
