Hey guys, I need your help with re-writing my resume. I have a resume now, but it seems that it's not getting many looks (catching employers eye). I don't know if the format is wrong, too much info, or too little. I'm in the computer/technical field. Do anybody have and software programs, info, or any advice that can help me build a better resume? I would really appreciate your help, so chime in.
Eh, what type of position are you looking for? I also work in I.T., so I might be able to help a bit. How are you trying to promote yourself? Unless you have some good experience under your belt, chances are employers aren't just going to see your resume on Monster and call you up. Unless you stand out from the crowd, it's not that easy to get noticed. If you are just starting out then you'll need to learn how to w**** yourself to potential employers. If you're not getting any response by posting or emailing your resume, then call them directly. I think talking to someone greatly increases your chances of being remembered. It's a competitive market, and if you're skills don't stand out from the pack, then you have to find another way to accomplish that.
I have 9 years of experience in those related fields. I've taken your advice when it comes to calling them directly but it seems that doesn't help either. Do you have an e-mail address so I can forward you a plain text sample of my resume for your viewing and you can tell me what you think?
I'm in the computer/technical field. At the top, you need a bullet list (single or multi column) of your skills. Recruiters are looking for a set of skills. LIsting them at the top does not make the recruiter dig it out of your experience or some list at the bottom. List skills that you have some or even just a little experience in; recruiters do not expect expertise in the entire set that they are looking for. (Reading between the lines: get as close to lying as you feel comfortable )
Man, spell RESUMé right... I thought this thread was about starting help again... get it? Resume HELP? Anyways, in all seriousness, make sure it's about 1 or 2 pages long. And don't list all the software where you're NOVICE, BEGINNER, INTERMEDIATE, or EXPERT, or the guys who really know the stuff you claim to know will make fun of you forever at the office... like this guy who came in listing that he knew JPEG 1.2 (WTF?)... we should have all thanked him for making us laugh so much... And your new employer doesn't want to know where you went to HIGH SCHOOL either.
