I am moving to Austin in 11 days, and I was wondering, are there any acceptable south Indian, Pakistani, Irani or Arab restaurants in Austin?

The best Indian restaurant in town is The Clay Pit downtown. on 15th and Lavaca.

Ditto on the Clay Pit...really nice atmosphere, too.

At night the prices are comparable to Pappadeaux's or something along those lines...

But the best thing about that place is the LUNCH BUFFET. It's 6 bucks for all the curry you can eat. One of the best deals in town.

Forget The Clay Pit. Its way too "foofy" for me and everything is ala carte and pricey.

If you want BETTER food that doesnt have all of the atmosphere of Clay Pit go to:

    SAROVAR
    8440 Burnett Rd.

(on the North side of town).

Glad you are moving to the best city in Texas! ;)

Sarovar has diminished in quality as of late- the buffet anyways.

Another question... I doubt anyone can answer it, but maybe someone can... Do the good Indian places that have a lot of meat on their menu use halal meat in Austin? I'm assuming that all of the good Arab restaurants do, is that correct?

Ok, I went to this Clay Pit place's website (claypit.com), and the prices are outrageous! All of the prices are at least 3 times the price for the same dishes in Houston. $4 for Pakoras! $15 for Boti Kabob! Do South Asians actually eat there?

I read austin.food on usenet, and some guy was talking about how his fearless (of food) friend became "violently ill" from Sarovar.

I know there are plenty of Indians, Pakistanis and Bengalis on this board... please give me some advice on decent and affordable food from our part of the world in Austin.

if you like South Indian food... you can try Madras Pavilion.

personally, i don't care for the food at all, but many Indians really enjoy it... its totally veggie and they have stuff like masala dosa, idlii & sambaar (hell i can't spell these words! :D )

I personally don't like the Clay Pit all that much... I really haven't had good indian food in Austin...

If you like good mediterranean food, try Marakesh downtown. They have the best shawarma in town. Their grape-leaves are really good too.

there is also a place called "Star of India"... your standard indian buffet restaurant, nothing fancy... i've dined there before and enjoyed it.
