I hope any of you with Gamecubes are playing this.

Fresher, better, sharper and more impressive than any Resident Evil to date.

    Some hype:

Gamespot Review: 9.6 out of 10

IGN review: 9.8 out of 10

Don't have a Gamecube? PS2 only owners, don't worry...you'll get to play a version of this next year.

I'm about 5 hours in right now...incredible, awesome game. I think it might be one of my favorites of this entire generation.

Is the control scheme the same as the older games? Any major changes to the series?

Definitely. In fact, the old control schemes stopped me from being a big fan of the past Resident Evil games.

They've changed it to where the analog sticks control movement like most games; the camera is a 3rd person/over the shoulder angle that works really well. (you can see from the screenshots).

In fact, it's more a survival/action horror game than straight horror of the past. Tons of weapons; all upgradeable as well.

Here's what one of the reviews says about the control scheme:

    Better yet, check this out:
    Gameplay videos

It's a clip of a guy playing the intro level. You get a great sense of what the gameplay is like.

And I just gave my nephew my Gamecube for Christmas! Argh! Totally forgot about Resident Evil 4... oh well if they'd come out with quality games more often I wouldn't have considered getting rid of the thing in the first place.

AGREE!!! I sold mine about a year ago for the same reason and haven't looked back, but RE4 makes me wish I had it again for the time being. The game looks pretty good.

Too bad RE4 won't be an exclusive much longer, I always relish when there is a bad ass game on the Cube. The new Zelda game is gonna kick ass.

It'll be late this year before the PS2 port is out.

This game is amazing, it had me and my fiance up all night last night, it really has some terrifying situations, moreso than any of the other ones!

I bought this game two days ago. I can't stop playing in. The best RE so far.

I've only played two of them. I can't remember the numbers. One was in the Mansion and the other was in the police station.

The one in the Mansion had this hallway at the beginning and the second you walk in these creepy dogs start running toward you. Those dogs creep me out. The dogs in Medal of Honor (AA) too. You can hear them coming but you don't see them.

Are there any dogs in this one?

This game does seem pretty awesome. All the stuff I've seen from it since E3 is just amazing, and several people said it was the best part of E3. Given the current reviews for the game, those comments were correct. Big props should go to the developers at Capcom for the game. The engine they have just seems amazing. IIRC, they use it for cutscenes, but they still look almost as good as CGI used in other games. Considering they are getting this out of the GC, and hopefully something that looks similar in the PS2, both dated hardware, I wonder what they can get out of the next-gen consoles.

I'm also interested in how it sells as well as how the GC sales. The GC had a pretty good month in December in the US, according to some numbers I saw recently. This may be due to the shortages of the PS2 (and, to a lesser extent, the Xbox), but considering there didn't seem to be any hype on a GC title like there were for PS2/Xbox titles (Halo 2, GTA:SA), it didn't do too bad. If they can hype up RE4, sales should be good. One thing that does worry me though is the MP2 sales. I saw it get good reviews and it even got runner-up for overall GOTY at IGN, but I don't believe it sold too well, at least so far. I'd probably rather play this, or a similar game like maybe MGS 3, than Halo 2, several EA games, and maybe even GTA:SA in some aspects, but it probably won't even get close to the sales of those games. I'd hate for this game to struggle to get to a million or so copies sold while the other games can get them without even trying. Perhaps widening the possible userbase to around 95-100 million (PS2+GC) instead of the 15-20 million (GC only) it has now can help the sales of the game later in the year. After all, I definitely think Capcom deserves to get every sale it can get.

I'm kind of got a growing backlog of games I need to play or finish, so I may see if I can hold out until the PS2 version comes out later in the year, especially if the reduce the price a bit. A friend of mine is thinking about getting it, so I may be able to check it out, but I think this may one of those titles I will need to get for myself if possible.

BTW, who's getting the RE4 chainsaw controller? :)

Sounds like RE1 and 2. I'm not a big action/horror gamer so I may be wrong. My friend that I mentioned earlier likes the genre though and I've watched him play the series before and I seem to remember what you described being in those two games. As for the dogs, I thought I saw one somewhere, be it in a video clip or just images for RE4. They seem to be pretty popular in the series, so I imagine they would be in the game. Maybe someone who has the game and isn't playing it can give a more definitive answer. Of course, if they aren't playing it, they are probably busy sleeping or eating, which they probably follow up with more RE4. ;)

I'd kind of cooled on Capcom recently, but they've done some quality stuff of late. What they were able to pull off with this game is simply incredible.

I wonder how big a changes will be made for the PS2 version. Certainly the graphics will get some serious adjustment, but there could be some extras thrown in to balance it out.

Anyhow, I'm surprised not more folks (those of you with gamecubes anyway) are not playing this....this is the kind of stuff being a gamer is all about.

I've found few things more satisfying than kneecapping a Ganado to his knees, toppling him over with a round to his chest, then walking up and emptying the clip into his head, making it explode in a gush of blood.

Then running for my life as I'm surrounded by even more of them. :D Great stuff.

i'm in the very early part of the game. the only dogs that i've seen are little wuss dogs that are stuck in beartraps. somehow you shoot them and they're set free.

graphics are nice, but i like the old skool zoms better. the "ughhhhh... arrgghhhh... oooohhhhuuuu!" moans were freakier and scared you more. in this one, they speak in some kinda foreign language before they come after you. they don't look as scary either. i like shooting'em in the nards. kinda cool.

also, unlike most... i prefer the fixed camera angle strategy in the previous re's. had a more cinematic feel or something to it.

OS, you're not past the first village area, are you?

You got no idea what's waiting for you bud. All those reviews talk that way for a reason.

Though I have to say, you're one of the few who actually really, really like the old control scheme. Control schemes like that are a staple of old survival horror games....sort of like a forced sense of panic because you have to think before you so much as move. (Umm..up means left?)

And it's too bad you shot that dog in the bear trap...he could have been your friend....

The dogs you do meet later on though....damn.

eh I'll wait for Unreal 3

    Bezerker
    Soldier
    terrain

that's some freaky lookin stuff... tho from what i read there is nothing that can play it at an acceptable framerate right now

which is a great excuse to get a new video card in a year or so when it comes out

Well, technically speaking, that isn't Unreal 3 and the 1st game that Epic uses the game for won't be part of the Unreal world, AFAIK. Bioware is also supposed to make a game with it too.

Like you said, there isn't really anything out there that can run the game at good framerates. I think that when they showed off the clips (which look much better than the pics btw), they mentioned getting only a few frames per second or something like that. I guess this makes the Reality Engine, probably the closest competition for UR engine, even more amazing since all the pics/clips were coming from current hardware and running at nice frame rates.

That's not a game. It's a demo of the next-gen engine. So you're waiting for...graphics? I guess? Don't know what you're trying to say here. But uh...yeah, next-gen PC graphics will be amazing.

And Unreal 2 was a disappointment. I'm more looking forward to seeing how some other PC developers use that engine than a new Unreal (non-tournament) sequel.
