Ok, It has been determined that I'm going to be buying a whole lot of really expensive studio crap that I have no practical experience with for my girlfriend. I feel that I'm going to have many agonizing questions that I hope people here who have experience with the stuff can advise me about. If not, I'm screwed.

The first bugabear is Pro Tools.

So, I really don't want to have to fork out the cash for Protools|HD, but I really get the impression that I'm going to be wasting my $$$ if I get the Protools|LE.

If I buy a brand spanking new dual processor Xeon PC with 2 bajillion megs of RAM, a Digi02 Rack and the Command|8 command surface, how much of a step down is it from the real deal, a entry Protools|HD system? I'll be saving about $7k (as close as I can figure), but if I should just wait until I can afford the real deal.

Any experience with any of this stuff appreciated.

    Thanks.

Exactly, you might be over-buying. I have a Digi002 with LE and an iMac and I can get some high quality recordings. That entire set-up only cost around $5K. That's nowhere near the cost of a professional quality board.

ProTools is definately the way to go IMO. There are other alternatives out there, but ProTools is the industry standard.

dont get protools you will have to get the hardware to so you can utilize it the way it is meant to... A better product is motu digital performer. It is a known better product then protools. Many in the industry use it but it is not the best product. If you want a good board that you can get at a low price on ebay now is yamaha 02R it is a great board you can get for a steal on ebay.

if you want an outstanding mic you can not go wrong with a blue mic especially the blueberry

I am a recording artist myself and I don't have a lot of money. You can hear some of my recording at www.gotemrecords.com If you don't want a full professional studio, then I can help. I bet you can't really tell the difference b/w what I have and what they professionals have. If your girlfriend sings/raps, then you can build a really cheap studio in your house/apt.

Thanks. FYI, the Digi02 rack and the Control|8 surface cost $3 more than the Digi02 alone, and if I ever do bump her up to the HD, I'll be able to take the control surface across.

Really the concern here is that the HD system has so much more on-board processing power than the LE system. Do you ever have a problem with pauses or whatever when stacking too many effects? I'll be getting a PC which I know is much less effective in handling clock cycles and multimedia, but if the iMac has limited issues, I'm sure a much faster PC shouldn't be too much worse.

That's actually close to my second question. I'm building a vocal booth & I've narrowed down my choices for primary vocal mic to either (most likely) the Blue Bluebird or a Rode NTK. It's for my girlfriend, so we want something a bit warm, not like an AKG C414, but definately not the muddy "warm" she gets from the cheap ass Oktava condenser she's curently using.

For the record, my girlfriend is sort of a professional. She had one of her songs picked up as the title track for a soft-core lesbian flick. How cool is that.

Here's the jacket for the DVD:

Good question. I honestly don't use a lot of effects in my stuff. That said, if you're worried about slowdowns definately go with a Mac. I had Pro Tools on my PC for a while and it was constantly giving me problems. Obviously, an iMac isn't the perfect computer for this (you'd be looking at a G4 -- along those lines), but it works great for me. Once again the stuff I'm doing is NOT real in-depth. Due to the fact I have an internship at a killer studio here I don't have to do the high detail stuff at home - just demo stuff. That said, I can do some pretty nice stuff.

What type of music are you recording anyway? Sounds like fun. I don't know much about the Blue mics that are mentioned in this thread (I've heard of them, heard they're decent, but no experience), but that sounds like a good way to go for vocals.

This is a secret that people in the industry knows. If you're not going to spend $2000+ on a Neuman mic, then get the Studio Projects brand mics. I have a Studio Projects C1 ($200) and it is very very comparable to Blue mics. Some people are really amazed at what it can do. My rough recordings sound better than most people's mixed/edited ones. If I just knew how to mix better...

Yeah I heard about that. Jay-Z is his favorite rapper and a person he looks up to. You can see in some of his lyrics that he's trying to imitate (sp?) Jay. I have a friend that knows this dude who went to UT and was signed to Lil Wayne's Young Money Ent. He's this black dude that ran track. Wayne was going to do a show in Austin in Jan/Feb, but I don't know if that's going down anymore. BTW, whats your brother's name or what does he go by? Also, does he have a site?
