An interesting pattern has been emerging in the Republican Party's handling of foreign policy: Individual GOP officials are now making a regular point of not only formulating an alternative foreign policy, to be presented to the American people and debated in Congress -- they're acting on it too, and undermining the official White House policies at multiple turns:

    • Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) is visiting Honduras in order to support the recent military coup against a leftist president, which has been opposed by the Obama administration and all the surrounding countries in the region.

    • Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) will be going to the upcoming climate change conference in Copenhagen, bringing a "Truth Squad" to tell foreign officials there that the American government will not take any action: "Now, I want to make sure that those attending the Copenhagen conference know what is really happening in the United States Senate."

    • House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) traveled to Israel, where he spoke out against President Obama's opposition to expanded settlements. He also defended Israel on the eviction of two Arab families from a house in east Jerusalem, which had been criticized by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

    • Rep. Mark Kirk (R-IL) boasted in June that he told Chinese officials not to trust America's budget numbers. "One of the messages I had -- because we need to build trust and confidence in our number one creditor," said Kirk, "is that the budget numbers that the US government had put forward should not be believed." Since then, he has declared his candidacy for U.S. Senate.

"Last night, the White House, with an assist from Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry deep-sixed DeMint's plans."

    but then:

"Last night, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell apparently intervened on DeMint's behalf, and the South Carolina conservative will be traveling to Honduras today. Interesting..."

Won't they shut down McConnell's trip too. That seems really odd

I misread that. Demint is still going due to McConnell's intervention. Still seems odd.

I'm going to take a wild guess and say that the GOP's "hey rest of the world go f-k yourself!" foreign policy alternative is not going to be very well-received. ('cept maybe in israel)

"A group of three Republican congressmen also visited Syria in recent days, but with a much lower profile. They too met with Assad. One staff member, however, said the two trips were planned independently and the Republicans were unaware of the speaker's travel plans."

Historically we don't have members of an apposing party going overseas and given speeches that are counter to or criticize the president's official foreign policy. If I recall, just the mere mention of criticism of the previous administration was met with shouts of treason and un-americanness.

Now we have republican congressmen and senators opening telling allies not to trust what the Obama administration’s policies are or that they can’t trust Obama foreign policy.

Whatever happened to criticism of the president or his policies stopping at the shore?

Can someone explain to me how that link "owned" basso? To me, it seems to indicate Pelosi did go behind the administration's back:

That being said, I find it amusing that the previous administration admonished diplomacy.

If I recall correctly there were several republicans that went along with Pelosi on that trip and in no time was she speaking counter to American foreign policy. Even republicans backed her up.

Send these treasonous bastards to Gitmo.

I knew there was a reason for keeping it open.

Oh wait, these guys are Republicans?

Never mind, they're already serving on borrowed time.

Republicans will openly undermind everything Obama does that is their only motive. If Obama comes with the most conservative idea ever they will bark against it with pitch forks thats the system.

so true - if anything, obama is trying to hard to be a moderate and appeal to all, but in the process he alienates his base and fails to win over his opponents, who will never support him anyway. generally, if you are trying to please everyone you end up pleasing no one. its a lose-lose situation and obama has failed to realize that.

really, obama has upheld so much of the bush administrations policies, i dont understand how republicans dont like him (or how democrats do - but thats a different topic).

not only upholding, but expanding bush's illegal wiretapping program
    upholding evidence gained under torture
    upholding the patriot act
    upholding indefinite detention
upholding the right to keep white house records secret - obama is fighting tooth and nail to prevent the release of millions of bush administration emails
bailouts for the very corporations/banks who screwed up everything in the first place
    waffling on closing gitmo

shouldnt you bush-supporters be in favor of all this?

Making the center-right agenda seem "liberal" is brilliant strategy.
