This is called trying to get in early to influence the bill so that minimal impact hits his own business. By publicly supporting this effort, ridiculous as it may be, Conoco can play a larger role in the legislative process and help steer the bill away from hurting them.

On a personal level, I'm sure Jim Mulva thinks global warming is a total crock of schit. This is called covering your backside.

^ I have to say I agree with T_J to some extent and that Conoco is likely getting in on this bill to try to protect its interests. I wouldn't rule out that Mulva hasn't seen the light regarding Global Warming but he has a business to run and if he feels a bill addressing global warming is inevitable its better for Conoco if he gets involved early.

The CEO of Duke Energy has been saying similar things for a long time.

Any business with large natural gas interests is going to promote CO2 regulation because it makes them more competitive with as compared to coal. Who do you think is funding all the "Coal is filthy" ads you've seen in the Chronicle? The Sierra Club? Al Gore's group? Nope. Chesapeake Energy -- a huge natural gas concern.

Big Oil could be smart and become tomorrows big nuclear.

If I was an oil company - I'd start diversifying and attempt to become truly an "energy" company and less an oil company.

Even taking out if GLobal warming is caused by C02 increases, oil is still not a limited resource.

It's like saying BP is a green company while their degraded Alaskan pipelines continue to wreck local wildlife.

i dont care what the intentions are.

big oil will realize that supporting the environment is good business. and good business helps the bottom profits.

if we get cleaner air because big oil is greedy...god bless.
